Go for a .308 would be my thinking.

If I had a .270, which I have, I won't be going for a .243. You already have a flat shooting rifle suitable for all things walking here and a terrific foxing rifle with a moderator.

I would be leaning towards a 30 calibre- realistically the 308 - excellent stalker and great all rounder. Altough the 270 will drop tougher/bigger animals then we have here the 308 will deliver 150 -180 grain bullets very effectively putting that larger hole in them. Larger holes don't equate more damage, the fast movers such as .243 or .270 canbe very destructive.

I said realistically the 308, but.....if you go 308 (I can here them all now, large selection of ammo, available all over the world, yeah, yeah, yeah), then I would look at the 30-06, other than dangerous game it will deal with all other game species throughout the world. It will handle 150gr (and lower if you get them) up to 220gr bullets with no loss of performance.

As a .270 and 30-06 owner I wouldn't be biased at all

Your other option is to get polar opposite types of rifles. Ultra liteweight or a heavy weight (although other than targets I can't fathom the need for heavy weight rifles for hunting, especially the type of hunting we do here whether game or vermin), even long rang verus short range what ever tickles your fancy.

I hunt with both a featherweight rifle, no mod or bipod and a medium weight set up, larger scope, bipod, moderator.

    Get a 223.

The 270 will kill any Irish game and Wild Boar if you go to Europe.

Never known a fox to complain about a .308 round.

I wouldn't go back to a .243, great calibre shot all three species with it here but my .270 retired it to the gun cabinet. It was later traded for the 30-06. I use this for foxing as well, much more flatter report off it then the 243.
I was using a 308 along side a 243 recently and the .243 was definitely a lot more 'barky' then the 308.

very good pints lads but why i am saying 243 is because a sauer 202 is after coming up for sale in 243 and i would fancy it.i had 2 stalking rigs for years and traded in one of them for a 17hmr.and how the gun cabnet looks a bit lost with out it i no the 270 will take all this country has to offer but it just nice to be abel to have somthing diffrent there aswell

Getting a 308 when you have a 270 is like getting a Passat when when you already have a Mondeo!

And that, is how you kill a thread.

    I've got a .270 and a .308.

Well I’m glad you understood !

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,242 ✭✭✭.243

you have one rifle, obviously its working well,a deer or a fox wont know the difference if its hit either with a .270 or a .243,there's that saying "beware the man with one gun"

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭tudderone

I had a .308 and used it for everything, deer, foxes and informal target shooting. I couldn't justify having two or three rifles. A.243 or 6.5 is probably an ideal all-rounder for here.

Personal choices are personal lol, but I always looked at it is - if I was to have 1 or 2 rifles for both deer and fox.
If I could only have 1, I would look at:
    243 or 270

    If I could have 2
    Fox = [220] or [223] [22.250]
    +
    Deer = [308] or [30 06]

Or something along those lines, because in my opinion the 243 and 270 are capable of taking both and sit well in that kind of area. I personally would not see the need for both.

As others have said the larger calibre rifles will not refuse a fox or there is no such thing as over killing a fox, which is also true.

Kills me to say it but not going to buy the 243 going to wat till the end of the season and trade the sauer 100 for a 404 realy dont need to rigs anyway

  • Registered Users Posts: 202 ✭✭Heavy handed

I’ve both of them. Don’t think I’d part with either. Use both on deer regularly and use the 243 on foxes with 55gr on the off season.

Can't see myself parting with either of my stalking rifles either, I have a .22 as well because it's a lot cheaper to scratch the itch with that when you like to have a few shots every fine day.

Personally speaking I think rifle wise I'll never be good enough to say any of the ones I have are holding me back from improving, I've too much other stuff to learn about shooting before I can start blaming the rifles. If I could only choose one rifle to keep it would be the .308 without a shadow of a doubt.

If you really fancy it and have the budget, why not get it and see how it goes. You might later decide it was a bad choice, but at least that will be your call and based on your own experience.

Everyone here is genuinely trying to help, but that said, at the end of the day I reckon we've all been in the same position of looking at something and really, really wanting it, no matter what anyone says.

I'm not sure if you already had an idea of the replies you would get here and maybe wanted to be talked in to or out of "pulling the trigger" on it?

Either way whatever you decide i wish you best of luck, happy and safe shooting!

    Simple,get another 270win..........
One lightweight for the steep stuff and a medium weight for the flat.
Or one fancy wooden one and one plastic??????

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭tudderone

Get a Blaser r8 if you can afford it, interchangeable barrel and the same bolt head with the .308, .243 and .270.

  • Registered Users Posts: 250 ✭✭cz527

if i was changing my 270 i would like to try 7mm rem mag and that was some of my thinking on the 243 aswell.i have the chance to buy the sauer 202 for small enuf money but there nothing on the gun no mounts scope silincer so it would take time to get it where i would like it to be.have a 17hmr shotgun and 270 what is one more

Have you made sure you can get the 7mm ammo reliably here and do you know how much it is ? I heard it was in the 60 quid (20) a box area.

Have 270 and 308 - they both work , the 308 is with a mod , so its great for foxes.

But what I would like to get is a 6,5 X 55- I had one years ago; great round.

I have a 308 and if fox shooting any distance be prepared to dial in or out they tend to drop like a stone, I also have a 223 and find it a good flat shooting round. Recently I bought a sako 85 varmint 243 and with 58 grain rounds I find it one of the flattest rounds I've ever shot imo

I like 243 lot of ammo choice soft to shoot might not be as powerfull as others but so nice to shoot and if i do need bigger iv the 270 there
