Has anyone tried the rum barrel aged lervig 3 bean stout? Have a can of it, and the regular one for tomorrow evening and really looking forward to them.

Any Helles recommendations from the good folk here?

My favourite German Helles are Augustiner and Ayinger so something along those lines that can be got in off licences as opposed to ordered online please.

They've done Farami coffee and oatmeal stout with 3FE before.

I seemed to have missed that whenever it was out!

The Einseidler Helles is excellent. Can be gotten in Aldi at the minute. Paulaner Helles is well worth a pop too.

Spaten in Lidl is €1.89 (I think) and hard to beat at that price.

Aldi, and I think the barstewards have put it up to €1.99 now  Still unbeatable, mind.

For anyone that might be interested, you can get Sierra Nevada Pale Ale 12 Pack on O'Briens online for €25. Seems like good value

Had one of those Whiplash Grisettes. Never had one of these styles before so nothing to compare it to. Not really into it, a bit bland and yeasty

Yellowbellys one was the best I’ve tried. Wouldn’t be a big drinker of the type though.

Not a hells but Budvar is a delicious lager.

    Couple of crackers lady might.
I wanted a break from all the Kinnegar IPAs so went with a couple of big hitters I hadn't tried before.

Third Circle Break from the Haze West Coast IPA (yes, the name did attract me). Delicious. Malty, bitter, piney, herbal goodness. Loved it.

Then a Rye River Belgian Imperial Stout. This did exactly what you want an imperial stout to do but with a nice, Belgian roundness to it. Great beer.

It got me thinking that both these beers would have blown me away around 12 years ago when I started getting seriously into beer - now they are made my Irish breweries!

Did the Craic/ Hoppy Days meet up on Friday. A few new ones, but probably the revelation was the difference having the darker beers out of the fridge really made. I generally aimed for cellar temp (out half an hour/ beer before) but didn't pick the Wicklow Wolf Hoppy Red from the mystery cans after it being out of the fridge and up to room temperature - like a different, much nicer, beer! There's a few I'm going to have to revisit on this (probably school boy) revelation. Continue to learn from these "events".

I had Rozenlambiek by Brouwerij Oud Beersel over the weekend, growler. Ooooof. What a beauty of a beer. My word! One of the best I've ever had.

I guess I'll be drinking 9 White Deer this week. Just got delivery of 3 boxes. One of Stag Rua and 2 Mixed Boxes.

This is all because last week I was in ALDI and found a 16 box of Brown Bear IPA that equated out to 97 cents a bottle. Had a few and went online where one thing lead to another....

Yeah it's kind of a nice Monday pick me up when an unknown number rings and it's a courier saying I've got 3 boxes of beer here for you...

Is that the one that's about €15 for a 330ml can?

Yeah, they’ve two barrel aged 3 beans out and they’re about €15 a pop.

Supervalu in Wexford has one of them for €10.50.

I often buy expensive beers, but don't think I could go that steep!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,563 ✭✭✭VW 1

Just checked Martin's website, where I purchased it. Was 6 for the regular and 14 for the rum. I don't mind spending a bit extra the odd time, but I must confess it was part of a larger spend and there was no price on the shelf for the rum version. It is quite steep for a 330ml can, prob wouldn't have been so quick to pick up if I'd known!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,741 ✭✭✭Effects

How much would you say it was worth?
I think the last beer I bought that was a bit too expensive was some Danish stout that was €9 for a 330ml bottle. It had a green, screen printed label. Nice beer, but I'd still go for a good Irish one over it. And at the time, the barrel aged Black Boar was still around.

Hard to put a worth on it, especially when it's a once a year buy. I don't mind paying expensive for the likes of 200 fathoms, kbs, CBs etc when they're infrequently released. I'd always pay it to see if it's nice, as it's my favourite style.

For example I wouldn't pay the 7-8 euro a standard can of northern monk or to ol charge, because in my experience they're hit and miss, can be great or ok. Whereas for the imperial stouts you almost always get a very good beer for the higher price.
