That all goes back to residential, what is the justification for shutting down our economy again?

You do understand that residential homes have staff to run them and those staff don't live in them? Those staff have families who work, go to school commute and are exposed to the virus which then can infect the staff members. With the best will in the world it is impossible to carry out the type of care required in nursing homes at 2 metres distance and even with the best PPE and the greatest of care transmission will occur in those circumstances as evidenced by the number of health care workers infected during the height of the pandemic. People keep talking about 'protecting the elderly' and forget that means also protecting those that provide them with care.

Perhaps valid reasons, but a few days ago the very same people said there was no need for any countries to get additional restrictions.
It's not like everything on that list happened over a few days!

If Hollywood films are anything to go by, governments discarding the advice of scientists always works out well, so I wouldn't worry.

I dont follow this? Was it a joke that went over my head?

    Nope.

WFH is not going away. You need to adapt to it or it will leave you behind.

You are the 1st person i have heard who says they miss the commute.
This tells me you are slow to change, rather than making the most of the time gained by not commuting, you are what? staying in bed?

As far i can see, its about a 15/85% split with my colleagues as to WFH being a good thing or not. Most of the 15% who don't like it are because they have not adapted to it, have problems at home, or don't like change.

Humans are creatures of habit after all.

A lot of the dates mentioned are 3rd October though. Maybe last Thursday they gave it a chance to improve and when it didn't recommended measures on Sunday.

I've a lot more respect for someone like Glynn who had to navigate through the re-opening and living with covid plan. Its easy for Holohan to come back and say we need a lockdown, we don't need any experts for that.

We're all sharing the same island, that's a reflection of how things are on this little rock. High rates in NI coinciding with an RoI increase.

So you go from level 2 to level 3 not straight to 5 and create mass panic.

We will end up with a hybrid of levels 3 and 4 I reckon...

I'm seeing a cringe state of the nation address from MM tonite and a few tweets from varadkar after

I reckon they'll stall it for a week and give the public an ultimatum

Have they demonstrated that transmission has happened in shops at all? They've barely done it for restaurants where at least you could see the how given people are stationary for a time.
Originally, when they shut them, it was before we had mandatory masks so surely they could remain open (maybe slightly tighten up if needed) and keep people working?

The real issue is where people are mixing without wearing masks - namely homes and schools. I can reluctantly see the value there although having a "one household visit" seems better for morale support.

NIs sudden huge growth in case numbers might have scared NPHET too. They ballooned out of nowhere this weekend like.

Hell of a lot of builders vans with Northern Ireland reg plates on building sites across Dublin in particular. I'd be knocking that on the head asap.

They've explained that going to level 5 is highly likely in any case so choice of bringing in lesser restrictions and bringing in 5 after or short sharp level 5 measures

I'm thinking Level 3+ (a la Dublin) and a clear ultimatum that if numbers don't come down in 2 weeks, we will be going to Level 5.

    Pure guesswork of course.

It feels like we're all in a bus hurtling toward a cliff and the driver is telling everyone to stay the course, while others in the back are complaining about negatives of turning the steering wheel.

    Somebody needs to DO something.

Ya I see no reasoning behind shutting shops. Its probably the safest place to be.

Cold hard fact is the government don’t have the funds to implement level 5

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,229 ✭✭✭Sweet.Science

They cant afford to shut down again

    This government is so weak,

Put it to the people and have a referendum ffs.

    A) hibernate and wait for a miracle
    B) Mitigate and get on with it.

Of course, option B is the only option because as someone else here said, Zero-covid is not possible.

All this government/NPhet noise is just kite flying to get the people to make the calls. Pathetic.

Both of those options equals failure.

Be a safe middle ground for the government

Ignores the fundamental truth about respiratory viruses

If you're taking action you have to take it quickly whether it's right or wrong

Infections have all ready been seeded for the best part of the next 2 weeks.

If we go full level 5 or nothing today.

In ten days we will have a daily infection rate of 700+ given the current rate of growth.

    Short term, yes.

But life is a long term ideal.
