Daughter just texted me. She works in the Jervis centre and went for a walk on her lunch break. Massive queue outside the Toy shops there on Jervis street seems to be a bit of a panic they'll be closed for xmas. This is the level of intelligence we are having to deal with now during this pandemic.

Smyths in swords reportedly the same. Bonkers!!

If we do get a level 4 or level 5 lockdown expect all the supermarkets to be packed and out of toilet roll again haha.

First lockdown started when we had 68 ICU and 380 Hospital cases.

Today we have 23 ICU and 150 Hospital cases.

Have we been preparing for this or just fingering ourselves silly for the past 7 months? Looking at these figures it looks like we've gone backwards if we go to level 5 today.

Looks that way. HSE caught out by a rise that everyone expected except them and did nothing to plan for.

Nphet is there to carry the can for decision making on covid

The problem for MM and co if they go against level 5 is that they're now carrying the can and can be blamed for anything that goes wrong henceforth

If there is a second national lockdown, government need to go for a suppressing covid strategy. Need to build up testing capacity and really rout out the virus and hospital beds.

I'm hearing that all gaa club games have been suspended.

They only have themselves to blame. Acting like swamp creatures in the middle of a pandemic.

People need to stop with this knee jerk nonsense.

This virus isn't spreading because a few people aren't as vigilant as they could be. The virus spreads because people interact. As in work, shop, live.

Having a go at each other for not adhering to restrictions is ridiculous. Its divide and conquer (deflect). People acutally making people responsible for level 5 threat? Thats idiocy. We're looking at level 5 because our health system is a shambles and because our decision makers are pissing their pants and are too afraid to make decisions. Not because 200 students had an outdoor beer or 2 dozen people watched a GAA game.

    Stop this nonsense.

Indeed, leaking a government letter and spooking the people. Shocking lack of intelligence.

This is a huge problem ffs. Its breaking the rules and it's so annoying for the people who follow them and now have to pay for it.

I think we are at a crossroads relating to both retail and hospitality if we go down the NPHET route to level 5.

First off, NPHET are calling for a 4 week closure. Assuming that its only 4 weeks, this would allow us to revert back to level 4 on the 3rd or 4th of November. NPHET will insist on level 4 restrictions for a minimum of 3 weeks before moving to level 3 so high street shops will most likely be closed for most of November along with bars, cafes and restaurants etc.

So tentatively we could be moving to Level 3 on around the 24th of November so non essential retail could open.
This would give non essential retail aprox 29/30 days trading before xmas. Must consider that retail is and will operate at reduced rates at the busiest time of year.

If you take the hospitality industry, based on a 3 week interval, we could tentatively move to Level 2 restrictions in and around the 14th of December.
At this stage, not many places will bother to open. They may have good trade (all be it at reduced rates) for 2 to 3 weeks until January.
I cant see may bars or restaurants open until at least Easter and will depend very much if the third wave is happing in Spring 2021.

All in all, I think this level 5 is going to be absolutely brutal with mass unemployment and the loss of 40 to 50% of all eating and drinking establishments.

We are not living with this virus. We need a honest debate how this will all pan out.

This. And all you ever hear from doctors and nurses is that they need more funding. It's quite clearly not a funding issue.

9th highest in the EU on a per capita basis. I can't understand how we are spending more than countries like Australia where the service is significantly better.

Our spend based as a percentage of GDP puts us right in the middle of EU but in fairness our GDP figure is a bit messed up with all the money being funnelled through us. Per capita spend looks like a more realistic metric.

Good man Paddy. I trust you will be well armed with plenty of sanitiser to douse any scrotes not wearing masks or ignoring the social distancing measures.

You're right. It's not because of a few people it's because hundreds of thousands of people in this country do not think the rules apply to them. People were asked several times to reduce their contacts, and they haven't.

We are looking at level 5 because we live in a country full to the brim with self entitled morons - for no other reason

Well if retail closes with no idea when it reopens then they're just doing the Christmas shop to try and have some sort of Christmas. Can't begrudge anyone that.

Different story to the supermarkets that'll be open regardless.

Stop deluding yourself. People are entirely responsible for this, the restrictions in place would have been fine if people had simply behaved responsibly, nobody said you cannot live, but do it 2m away from other people.

Hard not to agree with the 2nd last point about underfunding, decades of lack of investment. The main thing driving level 5 is that our ICUs are nearly full. They are health committee focusing on health. It is up to the Gov to figure out the rest.
