While outlets such as barbers, hairdressers and clothes shops closed during the last lockdown and were deemed non essential, off licenses were allowed remain open and deemed essential. What a farce. And it will be the same this time.
If they were to close people would be kicking up something fierce.
    Lol.

If they close Off Licenses we riot. End of.

How did the GAA blow it? Surely it was the players and supporters that blew it.

Demanding a meeting with NPHET didn't help the optics one bit, there's plenty of schadenfreude over that particular hissy fit.

You can't close off licenses as people who are alcohol dependent can die from withdrawal.

This is never accepted by opposition or the media.

We spend enough yet the opposition always say we under invest in healthcare. We dont. Our health spend per capita is well above average for Western Europe.

    Nobody wants to reform.

This. And all you ever hear from doctors and nurses is that they need more funding. It's quite clearly not a funding issue.

First lockdown started when we had 68 ICU and 380 Hospital cases.

Today we have 23 ICU and 150 Hospital cases.

Have we been preparing for this or just fingering ourselves silly for the past 7 months? Looking at these figures it looks like we've gone backwards if we go to level 5 today.

Only in Ireland would an off licence be deemed essential.

    I have nothing against alcohol.

We got into this mess largely because of house parties.

I wasn't at any, and yet somehow I managed to consume alcohol weekly without the urge to throw one.

Drug driving has been up since the restrictions months ago. Only solution is to ban cars.

Nphet doesnt need undermining. They've done a pretty good job at that themselves. Nphet needs to be disbanded. Putting our trust in Nphet is like giving the cat the job to watch the cream.

It should not be a national level 5.

Counties like Dublin, Donegal, Cork and possibly Galway should be moved progressively up levels if required.

Moving the entire country to level 5 immediately is massive overkill.

You might think. But I am regularly in 4 or 5 counties of a working day. It is a tiny country and people move avout a lot.
There is background data here that we are not aware of, eg people really messed up waiting for serious medical attention for other things who will not get near a hospital for 6 months if this thing gets out of hand

One in every five patients admitted to the critical care unit in Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital during the lockdown were there because of booze, a top medic has revealed.

Liver consultant Dr John Ryan believes hospitals around Ireland had similar numbers as drinking reached crisis levels during the pandemic.

MM and varadkar won't want responsibility for a negative outcome here so they will go with level 5

and those people should be properly fined and enforced by gardai who seem to be more concerned with busting people for weed and checking car insurance. banning alcohol is a ludicrous idea.

They should have legalized weed at the start of this, instead they drove prices through the roof, what a time to be a drug dealer, there probably praying to Saint Tony every night for the gifts he brings.

As for alcohol there at nothing, we've now more sheebeens than pubs. If there going to shut off licences they may close the brewerys as we've moved on from 6 packs to kegs.

Not really. You can easily word something that government agree and are moving up some restrictions, but explain away why not going to level 5.

Be like, We agree with NPHETs assessment that cases are increasing/things becoming worrying etc, but in light of other factors like economy, we're pausing the move to level 5 atm and going to level 3/4 whatever, and seeing will cases drop. It's on everyone to work with these restrictions bla bla or we will be all in level 5 in 3/4 weeks.

Daughter just texted me. She works in the Jervis centre and went for a walk on her lunch break. Massive queue outside the Toy shops there on Jervis street seems to be a bit of a panic they'll be closed for xmas. This is the level of intelligence we are having to deal with now during this pandemic.

I well remember the formation of the HSE. There were hundreds of people recruited to posts that hadn't been vacated by the previous incumbent or one or two words were changed in the job description to make it seem like the new role was somehow different to the incumbent's. Then there was the intense pressure to keep facilities and admin open in parts of the country where they weren't needed. And it has continued in that vein with ministers taking advantage of the HSE to bring jobs to their constituencies. This mindset has to change before the HSE can change.
