In my opinion the recommendation from NPHET should never have been leaked like that . I have seen so much anxiety now since last night . People upset , angry , weary and very anxious because of the uncertainty and lack of clarity and guidance .

The government has no choice. Level 5 it will be.

Can you imagine the opposition and media if they didnt and death levels rose dramatically.

McConkeys opinion about going to level 5 is the headline news on RTE

McConkey was on Pat Kenny earlier this morning spouting, what can only be described as, utter horsesh!t.

He said we need to implement a program where school kids can trade in their phones to get better phones which will run the HSE app. Even though the age limit for the app is 16 years.

    1. How in the name of jaysis could we fund such a program and...

    2. Why would we do this? We don't need to - every kid I know over the age of 10 (and younger in some cases) have a mobile phone that can run the app. Even a bog standard cheap smartphone has bluetooth.

    Utter nonsense...

This guy is clearly not living in the real world.

Level 5 restrictions are going to further decimate the country and cause public uproar, possibly unrest.

Why can't they target problem areas (e.g. shut universities, everything online) and introduce greater powers for law enforcement to tackle stupid behaviour (e.g. have a house party, fined 5 grand or jail time, go on the lash with a load of people from college, immediate expulsion).

So who did the daily online lessons with my daughter every day for months? The school janitor?

I reckon boards could break again this evening when there is an announcement after the cabinet meeting

Agreed. The restrictions thread in particular is likely to be infested with comments from the permanently fake outraged anti authority rabble rousing brigade right enough.

    It's a shambles now

My grandmother worrying that she will be left alone due to travel restrictions

That won't happen but its awful worry for a 92 year old

There's already a dedicated teacher bashing thread btw, maybe use that and free up this one for the grownups? Hmmm?

Someone brought up the teachers I'm entitled to answer and give my opinion. I'm not bashing but the teachers are been painted like they are the sacrificial lambs. They were the very first taken out and the last to go back in. They are to provide a public service, like our nurses, police, fire brigade and they have no problem accepting their responsibility.

I doubt if the government were genuinely taken aback, the writing was on the wall. Politics plays its role.

How far off are your experts and modelling if on Thursday you recommend no other county needs to go to level 3 but then on Sunday you say "no we need to go to level 5 for 4 weeks countrywide".

Did we just give up on localized lockdowns? When it worked in Kildare, Laois and Offaly. If Dublin or another part of the country is not responding to 3, go to 4. Places with small incidence rates are going to be subjected to the same restrictions as Dublin, makes no sense.

The change between Thursday and Sunday was the change from Acting Chief Medical Officer to Chief Medical Officer.

The number are climbing exponentially and another week and there will be 50% more cases, or leave it till the end of the month, and there will be 250% more. Delay does not change the numbers for the better, only the worse.

The virus is out there, everywhere. If you circulate, you can catch it, so do not circulate. Stay at home. If you have to leave your home, do not go to someone else's home. Only do essential things outside your home, and always wash your hands, wear a mask, and keep your distance - always.

If people will not do as they are asked, then what can anyone do?

The Civil Liberties crowd start screaming blue murder then though. Unconstitutional, can't enter houses, police brutality sh1te gets spouted.

They worked from the safety of their home unlike other public services that weren't afforded the same.

NPHET's flip flopping and leaking of recommendations as the nation prepares to try to get on with life, keep businesses afloat etc at the start of a new working week is infuriating.

So you need to enforce it, guidelines are **** all use. Public health but also keeping our country open is the priority. I want to see pragmatism from our leaders, the 5 stage plan is useless as its too rigid. If certain areas are a problem go to level 4/5 but pressing the nuclear button for the whole country is senseless.

That's your uninformed unprofessional opionion. Last I checked you're not on the NPHET.

I'll take their advice over yours thanks very much.

    Nurses worked throughout.

I know 2 nurses who worked through the 1st major shutdown and they admitted to me that very often they were sitting around doing nothing for weeks on end.

Many of the hospitals were next to empty.

Remember the emergency field hospitals in the UK that never had a single patient?

But this talk doesn't fit the narrative.

Actually, to be more clear, maybe I personally had a little heads-up on the upcoming likelihood of level 5, having lady Monday got an email from somebody whose work brings them in contact with NPHET. Naturally I would not post what was said to me here, but I DO know that the cabinet would have been aware of this likelihood too.

This is extraordinary stuff. You have to question the competence of NPHET if their recommendation changes radically based on Friday's and Saturday's data.

That's been my point all along since last night, how can you say Thursday it doesn't warrant level 3 but now on Sunday we need to go to Level 5.

    Its absolutely farcical.
