I cannot fathom why rapid point-of-care tests are not being used by Ireland. The US is using them for their sports leagues. If you test positive then you get a PCR to confirm. These should be rolled out in mass.
If we had efficient testing and tracing this wouldn't be an issue.

NPHET doing the right thing. Good to see Tony back today calling the shots.

    WOW

NPHET's recommendations should absolutely be made public. Whether you agree with them or not, we should always have visibility into what feeds into government decision-making.

Government decisions are not going to be easy as they have to find a balance between politics, economy and public health but whatever they choose, there has to be visibility and accountability.

I'd be curious how many healthcare workers currently have it and how much spare ICU capacity is. Flu season quickly approaching too so no room for complacency

I would agree with this if it was 10% or 15% but your telling that 40% of the population have been able to avoid this. 40% high risk just does not make sense.

Seriously read your own post. You're asking why TWO FIFTHS of the Irish Population hasn't got COVID.:confused::confused:

Even the most generous surveys would put 15% of the entire population as infected. Even if you assume all of these were high risk individuals you're still no where near your magic 40% value.

Flu is a non-issue with social distancing and masks. Not sure why people even talk about it anymore, Australia proved it's not a problem.

Noises out of government suggest they won't bite and that a Level 3/4 plan is more likely. As social media is reporting they are mostly not impressed with the sudden announcement nor happy about the recommendation.

Regarding how the deaths are calculated, are these people who were diagnosed with Covid in the past x number of days, or have ever had Covid?

    No deaths reported today.
    Yet lockdown proposed?

Deaths arent a usable statistic. After a death you have 3 months to file a death cert and notify the state. Yesterday there was 10 deaths notified. 8 were mods than a month old.

The lag just makes its unreasonable.

I have written to my local tds and to a number of tds who have publicly commented that deaths are an appropriate number to consider when making decisions suggesting that the period for reporting be reduced during the pandemic (perhaps to a week or 10 days.

I hope NPHET have a massive pot of money that will be put ontop of the envelope to the Government as the amount of people that will be unemployed if their recommendation is implemented will not be pretty facing the winter.

    Round and round we go.....

    Mental.

You read my posts wrong man, I never said that. The original poster said that 40% of the population was high risk and I said if the figure was that high we would have a lot more deaths and serious illnesses from the cases we have had.

It's a lose lose decision for the Government. I'd say Martin won't be sleeping well tonight.

As much as I hate to say it, she's right.

Are NPHET capable of delivering a viable long-term solution? I don't think so. It would appear they have themselves whipped up to a frenzy. Their only method of dealing with covid19 seems to be lockdown. A sledgehammer to crack a nut. The ramifications of which are so widespread that we'll be dealing with it long after covid19 is forgotten.

I don't know about anyone else but we have literally come full circle from March and that is incredibly incredibly depressing.

We were somehow blessed with one of the most unbelievable springs this year which is I believe seriously helped a lot of people through the worst of this last April.

Winter bring seasonal affective disorder on a lot of people anyway and now that we seem to be facing stay at home orders again along with mass unemployment, it's going to drive so many people to the edge.
