It's a global pandemic. We don't have the testing surveillance of South Korea to control numbers. Level 5 will bring r rate down below 1 within weeks and hopefully ensure our hospitals will cope.

What choice have NPHET.... Hospitals will be overrun in a few weeks including routine healthcare ........ Awful economically but reality is reality.

Certainly don't want some of what you're smoking.

Some dilemma the Government now finds itself in. Looks like this recommendation was dropped on it without any warning. Judging by media reports tonight it doesn't seem like there is enough political will to go for nationwide level 5 restrictions just yet.

However it is a massive political risk for the Government to go against NPHET advice. NPHET won't hold any punches back down the line if a much longer period of restrictions are needed due to a lack of action now. Public opinion will likely swiftly turn against the Government if the health system comes under serious over winter due to a lack of action now.

Built up by some people. A lot of other people have also lost a lot

More people have built up than have lost. Lookit I am not saying it to be a wagon but 20% or so have lost income and the rest have had nowhere to spend money. No holidays. No big shopping sprees. No big nosh ups in restaurants every week. There is nothing personal about facts.

We had only 29 ICU beds left yesterday and as we know there is a significant lag between testing positive and hospital admission, this is clearly highly concerning for NPHET.

    Link?

This is actually mental. Level 5? What happened to 4? I'd say we are in for big numbers so considering they already know them.
We need to get a grip on this, level 5 economic damage is severe but if we let free travel etc it'll just reseed a future outbreak.

Is Tony an absolute dictator in the making ;) Definitely the most powerful man in Ireland in 2020.

There will be haggling. Won't be level 5 in the end.

Tony Holohan does love a good lockdown!

Surely a bit extreme. He must really be worried about the health service becoming overwhelmed.

Yes like he was worried about the Cervical check woman previously.
He’s not “worried” about anything- do not kid yourself about that.
His hefty salary will be appearing in the bank account month end regardless of whether us mere peasants are destitute or not

There will be horse trading and we will end up somewhere between Level 3 and 4.

There is no horsetrading with trying to ensure hospitals are not over run.

i imagine NEPHET thinking is "if you want schools open, level 5 is the only option". I suspect they know more about school transmission that they have been letting on.

2 things. Firstly there will be trouble on the streets of they force an immediate level 5 on the country. People won't buy in like back in March.
Secondly, why are nphet meetings getting leaked. They are there to advise government, until they make their recommendations and a cabinet meeting makes a decision on them we should be none the wiser. The media are far to cozy amongst these 6 figure salaries piblic servants.

There's some level of hyperbole here.

NPHET's job is to make recommendations based on what's best for public health and how the health services can cope with increased numbers. Talking about Tony loving lockdowns or calling them dictators is way wide of the mark.

It's up to the government to balance the economic concerns with the public health concerns but bear in mind, a collapsed health service which cannot treat normal flu and ongoing conditions nevermind covid19, will have huge economic known on effects too.

Also bear in mind that many people thought the first lock down would completely tank the economy. The latest forecast is a 2.5% contraction for the year. Earlier in the year people reckoned it would be over 10%.

Problem is the government has fully accepted every NPHET recommendation so far.

If they shut down construction again, I can see many companies pulling the plug on big expansion projects that are in progress.
Intel in particular are in the middle of biggest ever building project in this country. The last shutdown cost them 3 months delay which will cause delay on new products reaching the market.

Israel is going through a serious public health emergency with a very real threat of health system collpase as ICU admissions will reach 1000 this week in a country of 10 million. So at least it is justified in some sense.

We on the other hand are facing a similar lockdown for basically no reason

I suppose the argument would be we have to be proactive (there's a first time for everything...), Israel are now being reactive as they didn't deal with the issue.

People are forgetting the government do not have to follow NPHET advice, they have their own brains and should use them.

It's less about what Level 5 could do than it being sprung in people on a Sunday evening with more than a chance that it or version if will happen very quickly. We also know that a set period for it - 4 weeks, is a movable feast and we could still be stuck in it at Christmas.

There were a few posts this afternoon 'Tony will be at the meeting' later today. Here comes our saviour type posts, well received.

The irony. No one thought Tony would pull this stroke at his first meeting.
