No messing with Tony, glad to have him back. NPHET deal with the facts, and if you're getting April numbers now, why wouldn't they recommend the highest level of social restrictions, it'll be for the government to decide on how to react vs the effect on the economy.

Seemingly Israel had protests too...some protesting lockdown...some saying its not strict enough.

From what I have seen Irish people have got slack to a certain degree.
Irish people need to get better at wearing masks, buses and business have to refuse service if no mask, limit numbers based on capacity better as well.
It's not the masks, it's the other behaviour.

Probably to a degree but really hard to police.

I don't disagree....but the numbers in Northern Ireland are becoming utterly bonkers as well, and that is outside of our control. The positivity rate up there is something crazy like 15 percent!

So what's the point in making us all adhere to level 5 so?

    Totally unfair

April numbers were just tip of iceberg due to lack of testing capacity.
Same numbers now are the extent of it.

Without shutting down all visitors coming in the country going Level 5 is pointless.

There is no way the Government will accept Level 5, NPHET are acting like a dictatorship.

There will be horse trading and we will end up somewhere between Level 3 and 4.

Am I right in thinking that 1000s of nurses etc came home and only 80 were employed at the start of the pandemic?

Could we not have spent big and built up our ICU numbers with all these staff?

6 months later and it's still all about the hospitals been overrun.

Hell even build a temporary hospital just for patients with covid who require ICU rooms.

What did the HSE actually do when we flattened the curve and gave them time to find a solution????

    I'll bump this.

Israel is going through a serious public health emergency with a very real threat of health system collpase as ICU admissions will reach 1000 this week in a country of 10 million. So at least it is justified in some sense.

We on the other hand are facing a similar lockdown for basically no reason

Ah give over. They're hardly doing it for the hell of it. Maybe thinking is level 4 for 4 weeks and then bring country back to level 2 vs rolling level 3 restrictions.

Numbers now are nothing like they were in April, you do realise that?

It is likely they were ten times higher than reported due to lack of testing, everybody knows this.

I don’t care. I’m not interested in “working with anybody“. I’ve no interest in pointless lockdowns. They don’t work. If they work for you then off you go- I’m not stopping you from implementing your own one

Tony our leader is back with a bang. lets see how our elected Government react to this. The senior officials group and the party leaders may not be in the mood to accept this.

Are schools open on level 5?

Tony Holohan does love a good lockdown!

Surely a bit extreme. He must really be worried about the health service becoming overwhelmed.

We had only 29 ICU beds left yesterday and as we know there is a significant lag between testing positive and hospital admission, this is clearly highly concerning for NPHET.

I agree that they have to act if they think it is the right thing to do, but something has gone badly wrong if we're jumping to a national Level 5 from a Level 2 across most of the country.

Why was the country not moved to 3 a week ago? Why were pubs allowed to reopen?

Businesses need to be given some chance to prepare for restrictions - I'd say most will be completely flat-footed by this. It might be obvious to NPHET for a while that this was on the cards, but I'd say most people outside the room were not aware.

It's times like this when you need a Cersei Lannister as leader and arrange a NPHET meeting at the citadel.
