It's what countries have been doing, looking to other countries for ideas they can adapt. Our COVID app code has been embraced elsewhere.

As we've seen during this if you go up against NPHET/DoH scientists you need more than just a bit of outrage because they will sink you for your lack of knowledge very quickly.

How dare we plebs ask a question.

Then we get a smart-arse reply- which could easily be debated vigorously if any prep time.

God forbid some unelected one dimensional technocrats who effectively rule the country atm may have to answer some questions.

    Yes actually pertinent questions.

Bordline Conspiracy Theorist McNamara wasting time with died of Covid, died with Covid is just a waste of everyone's time.

They are dead, they cannot overwhelm the health care system. They are no longer a part of the problem.

Getting frustrated. Don't blame him, he is dead on with being told two contradicting things while dealing with everything else.

Jesus Christ, numbers increasing, 122 now in hospital, 18 in ICU.

We learned yesterday we have a massive 17 extra ICU beds and currently 40 spare, and dribblers like McNamara are still debating the died with Covid died of Covid horsé****.

No wonder NPHET couldn't be arsed showing up to this nonsense, it will be while before they come again.

Nolans face throughout said it all.

If you've got the question, you'd better have done the prep! Many a journalist has been put in their place at briefings. This is a Dail committee, they don't do debate, they ask questions.

640 cases in Scotland. 7 deaths unfortunately.

232 new cases in Glasgow and Clyde

You just invoked the 2/3rds of the Holy Trinity in 1 sentence.

    Calm down.

If decisions are being made on the back of these numbers which will have resource implications for decades to come then yes they are legitimate questions to ask. The public and politicians have pushed NPHET and the HSE rightfully in the direction of more evidence based decision making.

The fact that Nolan is tut tutting valid and legitimate questions says it all about what type of people are on NPHET.

It is typical of academics and high brows in the medical field to dismiss 'stupid' questions like this.

They think they are above the people and infact they are-. Their decisions are wreaking havoc on lifes and livlihoods across Ireland and they will never have to take the brunt of the damage they have done.

    Let it rip?

    20 now in ICU.

How long do you think it would be before we fill up those 40 odd extra beds?

The decisions are being made to protect emergency health care and by extension the health service, deaths are tragic, but they are not the primary focus.

In pure clinical terms it doesn't really matter what the patient died of, but if they are present in hospital with Covid that's all that really matters.

Nah. I've explained before - I just think there's a lot of similarities between the two countries (population, demographics, borders etc), and they're interesting because in terms of things like schools and local restrictions (Glasgow) they're a few weeks ahead of us.

Is he suggesting CV19 can trigger a heart attack? I know it can in rare circumstances impact the heart, but is there evidence to show that it triggers heart attacks?

Even the flu is known to trigger heart attacks. It triggered my fathers heart attack some years ago.

That headline from Cork has been a weekly occurrence every winter for the last 20 years. We have never had sufficient capacity.

And yes it does matter in terms of decision-making the nature of the deaths, the age of the people, whether there are underlying symptoms etc etc. It is also relevant if there are other long term effects from this virus and that does need to be borne in mind also in decision making.

What we need is accountability for the decisions that are being made given the massive implications on our society for decades to come.

We need to put it all into a sense of perspective and stop scaring the bejasus out of people and making scapegoats out of certain industries/ sets of people with absolutely no backup for it.

First it was travel, then it was the pubs, now it's the students......... who next?

I only saw the last half hour and I fully agree. There was too much overlap of questions and as you say they were poor questions. One deputy on his turn even apologised in case his question was already asked as he was waiting outside for his turn!

With all the talk of PCR false positive/false negatives Glynn did not even give the sensitivity/specificity I think and said he'd mail the info.

Could the TDs not have arrived at a list of questions before the meeting?
Perhaps we need a thread along similar lines. Top 10 Qs we would ask. The mods could filter boardsies suggestions and perhaps some journalists could be asked to consider them.

It took an Alan Kelly question to even bring the topic up. Is the government trying to hide things or what?

I fail to see how Asymptomatic Covid can trigger a heart attack. If it did then how is it asymptomatic?

Indeed but we do not need this right now as a country (the next 4 weeks really are critical).

But best to get it into the open and sort it out.

NPHET and DOH seemed to be reluctant to do this which is not right in terms of democratic accountability. They can engage in advance on questions etc but the fact they had to be forced to attend probably meant it was a bit rushed. NPHET should have been prepared to ace this and make sure they knocked any doubters but vague answers and a dismissive attitude are not good for democracy.

To be clear: "asymptomatic" is reference to the patient experience. It doesn't mean there are no symptoms, just that the patient has not noticed any difference in their day-to-day experience.

A small increase in body temperature of half a degree or so, reduced oxygen uptake to 95%, slightly elevated stress hormone levels, very mild fatigue. These are all symptoms of many illnesses, but an individual may not even notice them. And for an individual with heart disease, these will all put additional stress on an already tired heart.

Being asymptomatic doesn't mean it's just sitting there doing nothing.

I think we can conclude from the soundbites on RTE News at 1 that if Cork is to go to Level 3, it will be countywide and not just the city.
