Hi all,

Shooting on Bord na Mona land?

    Hi all,

    Hoping for some info from you more experienced folks. If I have a licence for hunting only, based on landowners permissions, can I go on Brd Na Mona land and set up a target for practicing ?

    Out walking the land in question I regularly find shells etc so people are up shooting there, but curious as to the legalities. Rifle being shot would be a suppressed 22lr non restricted in case that matters.

    No, target shooting is only allowed on an authorised range. Clay pigeon shooting isn't legally classed as target shooting, so that can be done off a range, but the person or people who left the shells behind would have needed permission to shoot there legally. Also, people who leave shells behind discarded are gowls.

    Would that not be armed trespass ? You are on land with no permission from the owners and carrying a firearm.

    Its a public company which is why he's asking some of it could be indeed be publicly accessible land

    If you're on land that you have no permission to be on and you're carrying a firearm that's armed trespass.

    If it's publicly accessible land I would imagine that compounds the issue.

    This is after popping up a few times lately and as far as I'm aware you cannot shoot on bord na mona land at any time. The reason I know this is a wildlife ranger caught people about to go shooting on bord na mona land and warned them that if she had caught them on it they would have lost their guns

    The notion of shooting or even entering onto so called public land, ie land owned by the state is ridiculous. Plenty of state owned entities possess lands that are not for public access (excluding the obvious like state buildings, sensitive locations). The likes of the national park have various restrictions outlining activities that can be carried out, again ignoring the conservation of fauna, individuals can't just rock up and do as they want because we the people own it. If we do indeed enter onto these places it is usually because we are allowed to, but unfortunately as the population expands it has become more common to have to sign post certain locations either out of bounds or restricted access.

    Coilte are a state company, own a large amount of land yet charge for deer leases.
    I'm not even sure if you a part of a commonage you have any shooting rights on that ground

    Rights and easements on land are funny. We both might have the rights to graze on a commonage however there are other rights, sporting, turbary, etc. These are not automatic. Generally all rights are vested in the owner of the soil but not always. After the land purchase acts here many landlords retained sporting rights.
