Euro 2020 may be cancelled but that won't stop us getting stuck into some top class international football talk. This tournament will pit 48 of the best goals ever scored on the grandest stage of them all and it's up to us here to choose our greatest of all time. It could be a banger, it could be sheer skill, it could be a team effort or it could even be infamous. Whatever it is, we'll have a great trip down memory lane deciding it. Stay tuned, it's coming up next......

    - We have 48 teams in the mix here. What that means is we will have 16 groups of 3. When selecting your group winners and runners up, do it in order of preference. The top 2 from each group will progress. Top gets 3 points, second gets 2 points and third recieves 1. From there we enter the knockout stages.

    - All draws are made using a number generator.

    - I do ask that you view each clip in its entirety before voting, as mutiple angles can provide an even better view than what you initially see.

    - Reasons are welcome and will be used in tie break situations.

    - Each group match will last 30 minutes

    - Have fun!

Salif Diao (Senegal vs Denmark, 2002)

    VS

Vasily Rats (USSR vs France, 1986)

    VS

Geoff Hurst (England vs West Germany, 1966)

    Diao
    Archetype one touch counterattack

Could you even imagine Ireland scoring a goal like that?

Hurst's obviously the more memorable, and Diao's probably the best team move of the trio, but I'm a sucker for those long range rockets.

Vasily Rats gets my vote here.

(I've updated the AH Tourney thread with a link to this one for ya Omack)

    1. Diao - perfect from initial tackle to finish
    2. Hurst - great take and turn
    3. Rats - personal thing here, but I never rate long range piledrivers as I feel there's always a slice of luck in them. Think how many you see fly into row Z

Looking forward to this Mackers - crazy busy so I don't know how much I'll be able to follow but I know I'm going to enjoy it when I can :)

Don't forget to vote for your numbers 2 and 3 also, top two go through!

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 50,753 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

    Ah, whoops.

Gonna go with Diao number 2 and Hurst number 3. Was a great team goal and Hurst loses points for the controversial side of it

Diao as it was great counter attacking goal

Then Rats. Hursts doesn't even come into it for me

    -1 Diao,
    2 Ratts, agree about piledrivers
3 Hurst, wasn't even a goal plus that day was the worst day of my life (sports-wise); something I have in common with Denis Law:

"Denis Law, the Scottish Manchester United striker, refused to watch the match and played a round of golf instead. But as he walked off the 18th green, he heard a roar from the clubhouse. He knew what it meant:

“England had won the World Cup. It was the blackest day of my life.”

    Negrete - stunning technique
Frings - again, I'm a fan of the long range efforts
Ronaldinho - great free kick, but more amplified by poor GK positioning imo anyways.

    1. Ronaldinho - normally wouldn't go for free kick but it was against England and it was a beauty. It was so good I wouldn't really blame Seaman

    2. Negrete
    3 Frings

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,492 ✭✭✭ArnoldJRimmer

    Negret
    Frings
    Ronaldhino

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,540 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

    1. Ronaldinho - you can't do that!
    2. Negrete - you can't do that!
    3. Fringes - again, piledrivers are lucky

You're supposed to choose 3 from the same group :P

Diao is already through from his match. So this match is Negrete vs Ronaldinho vs Frings. Pick in order of preference!

    Ronaldinho 11
    Negrete 10

    Frings 6

Archie Gemill (Scotland vs Netherlands, 1978)

    VS

Carlos Alberto (Brazil vs Italy, 1970)

    VS

Kenneth Andersson (Sweden vs Brazil, 1994)

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 50,753 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

This is tough as all three are good

    Andersson - love the finish.
Archie Gemill - great individual skill
Carlos Alberto - barnburner of a strike

  • Registered Users, Subscribers Posts: 47,247 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

Carlos Alberto - the greatest WC goal ever imo. To do that in a final is incredible, and it's as much about the build-up play as the finish.
Archie Gemmill - another of my nominations, a goal I'll always remember from when I was a kid.
Kenneth Andersson - cracking goal, just not as good as the other two imo.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,117 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

I don't think Carlos Alberto deserves to win the overall thing tbh; there's far better goals there, but it has a place in the game that's kind of unchallenged.

I'll put it through here though ahead of Gemmill (Jongbloed committed himself way too early) and Andersson (nice clip, but nothing particularly special)

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,900 ✭✭✭trashcan

We all know what's going to win this, don't we ? Maradonna against England is a shoe in.

Mind you, his second wasn't bad either :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,492 ✭✭✭ArnoldJRimmer

I'm gonna go Gemill first as its a class goal, and Trainspotting
Then Carlos Alberto, and iconic goal
Nothing wrong with Anderssons goal, the other two are just classics

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,540 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

    1. Gemill - it's ridiculous. If that was Brazil people would still be salivating
    2. Andersson - great control, and then the pure nonchalance to dink it with the outside of the boot
    3. Alberto - genuinely never understood the love. It's walking pace, all the passes are routine. It's embarrassing defence

  • Registered Users Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

    Archie Gemill 12
    Carlos Alberto 10

    Kenneth Andersson 7
