Will there be literal anarchy, a breaking down of the system? you might think im be over dramatic, but in January 2020 when people were first talking about this pandemic some of their 'over dramatising' proved to be true.

Its bad enough that there are so many deaths, thats the worst, but what else are we going to see happening as it doesnt look like this pandemic is going anywhere fast.

If we sort the problem out by the end of the year, i think society will be okay, but i think workplaces, public finances are getting stretched and will eventually snap in 2021 if this is not fixed.

Feels like the calm before the storm. And yes i think the deaths and suffering people have is by far the worst, just wondering how bad society is going to get.

    What are you talking about?

    Society is grand.

Ok businesses are struggling and debt is being racked up by us and other countries, but the world will survive. Maybe you want to head over and post in the conspiracy forum instead?

The death toll is actually extremely low. People were predicting that this would wipe out a chunk of the population. Still a long way to go to 1M deaths.

I do think tension will reach boiling point if we are still in the same position come 1st Jan 2021. People will eventually demand their freedom back.

Call me crazy but I honestly think this was designed to kill off the elderly and sick so the world governments could save on things like pensions and welfare for the sick

I can see woeful hassle come Xmas time if people are still not allowed to socialise. I can't see people sitting at home on a wet miserable Xmas week while off work or NY Eve after being out of pubs for 9 months by that stage.Young people won't be at home on a NY Eve watching some sh1te on tv...

Death toll is low because of the actions that were taken. Some how these actions might not be able to happen again and then the death toll could be different.

Its hard to know but from Sept to Dec will show us the real pic.

It's the mass unemployment at the end of 2021 that will be the problem. If we thought 2008 and the austerity that followed that was bad. 2021 - 2025 is going to be horrific. Look at the rise in Trump, Brexit, etc following 2008. It's going to be a hard job preventing the rise of right-wing extremism after this 'Chyna - CHYNA' virus. (See it's already started).

There are 6 people in Irish hospitals today with covid19.
    Six.
The disease is no longer the problem, if it ever really was.

More people hospitalised from car crashes and the actual flu.

That is not the way to look at it. Look at America, it was only fifteen people at one point in such a huge population.

Numbers are low at the moment in Ireland, but the wrong attitude will see them rise.

Well technically people can do that now if they want. Nothing stopping them.

We had a few house parties in parts of Ireland, north and south , which recently saw the number of clusters and cases rise dramatically. This is what will happen if the populace just say "bugger this I'm going back to how it used to be".

Thankfully most are fairly sensible and being careful, as this is the way the virus will be controlled until we get a vaccine.

This is a cakewalk compared to what has happened before and is likely to happen in the future. 250,000 dead in the Indonesian earthquake. Hardly gets a mention on Boxing Day remembrance.

I worry because there is no plan to end the current grief we are enduring.
Initially Dr. Tony talked about the R rate and we met that target and it was then abandoned as a marker of any significance . They moved onto trying to eliminate the virus from Ireland which was initially stated as not a goal and not feasible.

My concern is that it's easy to introduce measures like hand santiser, masks, social distancing , pubs with food but there is no discussion on when they will be removed. I can see some of the current measures staying with us forever.
Measures ,of course, championed by idiots who lack the understanding of how the human race actually got to this point without these measures.

and the fear, panic and mistrust that is in people's eye. easier to instill that in somebody than remove it.

How can anyone still not be getting this, we are in the good position we are in today because of the partial lockdown, the handwashing, social distancing.

We are not the problem now, but look at the US, and there are localised outbreaks even in countries doing very well.

Its very hard to tell what way it will pan out if we get a vaccine by end of this year or early next year its likely nothing will change and 2020 will be seen as a blip in human history.

If goes on longer than that who knows, the almost collapse in the airline industry is a big issue along with people not spending.

on the other hand, we might evolve into a different society and manage just fine.

    100%.
The death rate is low for covid.

The reality is, you are far more likely to die from cancer or Alzheimers than you are from covid.

I think OPs opinion is typical of the millenial - any sort of challenge is a prelude to the end of the world. They are like this because they never had to face any sort of significant hardship or challenges in their lives.
We must remember that we in this country and in Europe have faced far worse crises that make covid look like a birthday party.
In 1910s there was the great war and then in 1940s WWII which resulted in vast swathes of Europe being destroyed leaving tens of millions dead. Society recovered and got on fine.
    Covid is only an inconvenience.

I for one welcome the collapse of the airline industry with open arms and I hope it will be a slow and painful recovery to a fraction of what it once was.
The airline industry is one of the very biggest contributors to climate change as it produces stupendous amounts of.
Truth be told, no-body needs to go on 5 long haul flights a year just for the sake of it. Too cheap flights and overdose of money is the problem.

I agree with you mostly but the economic effect is not a trivial thing and way more than just an inconvenience for a fair few people.

I was going to call you crazy, but then I thought about it a bit and about how covid only kills something like 3% of those it infects. Only a government initiative could be that ineffectual and inefficient. You may be on to something.

Maybe, but we must remember that for anyone over 40 in Ireland, a good economy is just a novelty. For anyone older, frugal living and a bandy economy was just normal, and they got on with life.

We are in a good position in one respect: cases, ICU admissions and deaths are very low. This is a good thing of course.

On the other hand, we have little immunity in the otherwise healthy population and therefore vulnerable to a resurgence if we let up restrictions to any great extent. We are, in a sense, trapped until a vaccine becomes available. We have painted ourselves into a corner.

Ok then, so if all that got us to where we are today why did masks only become a big thing 2 weeks ago? We are being subjected to a plan that may or may not have any bearing on the spread of the disease and which is destroying society. It's utter insanity.

Supply and demand. At the start there was a run on masks, the demand can now be met.

The spread has been contained therefore if people wear masks but increase mobility then outbreaks will be easier to manage because things like handwashing, social distancing, wearing masks and being more aware will slow the actual spread.

How ****ing hard is this to get?

Maybe in the early days but now I would say it is more to do with R>1 after phase 3 reopening. Masks introduced and mandated to try and put it back below 1. In fairness it seems to have had an effect but we're still stuck at phase 3.

Yeah, I didn't really explain it well but aye the R0 is in a good place, masks help keep it there with other measures.

There wasn't a run because there was no demand for masks as no one was 'advised' to wear them.
Lockdown began on March 12th and the mask thread in this forum was opened over two weeks later on March 29th which shows there was little interest in masks 'at the start'.

Lots of people on the main covid thread couldn't get a mask for love nor money at the start. Jesus even before lock down masks were sold out.
