Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Typically I see holidays as being a break from work. Going by that if you're unemployed you're always on holiday.

    What a waste of money. Just give whatever it's going to cost in tax breaks directly to hotels or restaurants if you have to do it.

    But that’s how all tax credits work, you can only get a refund of a tax credit if you have paid tax.

    Tax payers offered small tax break to spend in businesses which pay tax to help said business and its employees that pay tax. What's the issue here exactly?

    It's a TAX credit.

    If you don't pay tax, how do you expect a credit.

    For those earning under €25,000, Ireland has one of the lowest income tax in the world.

    And at about €18,000, it's one of the highest tax free allowances in the world.

    Probably best to reduce this to €10,000 (UK level) and then you can claim tax credits

    But their Christmas bonus will probably equate to more than the tax credit.

    A tax credit is not money they hand you out, it’s on paper. Thus, it won’t be paid back to anyone in a lump, it will be like a tenner less a month taken from your taxes. In this way, it’ll cost them very little and there’s no real admin to it and it’s stretched over 12 months for them to refund.
    Now if they were to give it back in a cash refund so everyone could have it, imagine the money they’d need and the resources to admin it....... it’s nothing to do with employed or unemployed it’s the cheapest easiest vehicle to deliver this with

    Says VAT is being reduced too from 23% to 21%. Is that really going to encourage people to spend?
