Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Ferry to the Netherlands from Ireland

    Hi all,

    Is this possible? I would like to travel to the Netherlands from Ireland via a ferry, not right now during the pandemic but next year probably.

    I think there is a direct ferry, but for trucks only, there was a story on RTÉ news about it a while back.

    They don’t tax pax, only drivers of trucks.. and even that is not happening due to COVID

    That's the only one I know of ,there is some talk of a cork ferry as well.
    Other than that you could land in France and travel from there.

    That's a good idea, I want to do a cycle run for a few weeks land in France out into Belgium then into NL.

    Just seen I would be put out at Cherbourg I would need to be closer to Belgium's border.

    Well than you have to go UK and then on or call a haulage company and they could drop you where you want.

    That would be a very long ferry, think 20-26 hours long. Would not be much of a market to justify it. There might be a container route to Zeebrugge (near enough) which might take passengers.

    Yes I suppose when a plane journey is 1.45hr max. Let me look about I'll post my findings.

    Yes according to some news articles and that video it's the dublin to zebrugge ferry and also one of the biggest ro-ro ships in the world.

    They don't take passengers, AFAIK CLDN don't take any accompanied freight so no truck drivers either.

    Seatruck do take cars and motorhomes as well as trucks up to a maximum of 12 passengers per sailing on their Dublin-Liverpool, Heysham and Warrenpoint-Heysham routes.

    Pre-Covid it has always been possible to book passage on some freight ships across the globe, there are a few agencies that specialise it. You'd want to enjoy reading and your own company as it will be days of nothing with little to no amenities on-board, basically living as crew without the work to take up your time.
