Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Time is but a mere human concept Sarah, we don’t have time, time doesn’t really exist - having said that I’d say the second wave is already here, just that we haven’t noticed it yet, so the answer is now, and now is actually a moment in time, rather than time itself, if time really exists that is.

    The assumption around the second wave is based on covid being seasonal. The weather gets cold in Ireland around the first week of October usually.

    I predict Michael Martin's first act as Taoiseach on Saturday will be to announce a second wave hasbegun and the Hairdressers will all be remaining closed on Monday.

    Until the winter when half the population is coughing and sneezing, most of that will be seasonal colds but some will have Covid 19 and not every will be wearing a mask.

    I was in Decathlon in Ballymun yesterday.
    It was a mess. No form of social distancing, no one way system in place , the security guard on the door was just telling people to keep coming in so the store was pretty full.
    If one person in there had covid there will be a spike in numbers.
    If thats how a few big shops operate we will be back to square one very quickly.

    And those 3-4 thousand BLM protesters packed beside each other 3-4 weeks ago shouting and chanting... how did that impact numbers?

    t-120days, but in the meantime enjoy any potential midday sunshine, right up untiil end of Sept, to boost Vit D take up, and build storage levels.

    Can't help but thinking if this wuflu should suddenly dissapate, the big pharma/vaccine co's won't be happy (stock prices).
    Maybe they'll want their potential market penetration to increase, even if it's just regional e.g. S.America or Africa.

    Second waves are usually the result of complacency built up by the apparent success against the first wave.

    China and South Korea appear to be having second waves just now.

    Germany has also seen a spike in numbers, despite having dealt very well with the first wave.

    We seem to have suppressed the first wave now, so looking at the above countries and their experience, we should expect a second wave a month or so after easing of restrictions. With ours easing on 29/6, look to 29/7 for signs of second wave.

    International travel will be up and running again in a significant way throughout Europe within a couple of week, including large volumes of travel to and from Ireland. If it took three months to get to a lockdown type scenario the first time; given the fact the virus is now prevalent in communities across Europe while accepting the offset of better testing and contact tracing regimes - it seems reasonable to think about another three month period until the second wave gets going to a level that threatens healthcare infrastructure. So end of September / start of October in line with the start of flu season seems about right.

    Enjoy this period as much as you can.

    Whether one finds the prospect of a second wave and associated restrictions to protect health infrastructure “miserable” or not is beside the point. Much of the western world is committed to getting international travel and movement through borders up and running ASAP. With infection remaining present at a community level (even at low levels) in these countries committed to opening their borders and cases continuing to rise globally it leaves a second wave inevitable.

    I might wish it was some other way, but the time for wishing was in January.

    Winters coming..... but if everyone’s heading off on their holidays to mingle with holidaymakers from other high infection rate countries, it’ll be here by September. In pockets of infection rather than widespread. People won’t stay a meter away in shops the hell they’ll self quarantine for 14 days after travelling.
