Otherwise all of the restrictions were for nothing

UK, the Americas and Sweden shouldn't be allowed into Ireland till they get their omnishambles together

I'm equally as concerned with Spain re opening to the Brits. An absolutely mad idea. Last I checked the UK infection rate was 200 times ours per capita. With their moves to re opening going nearly as fast as ours they will be stuck with this rate until the virus burns itself out, which they all eventually tend to do, but when that is who knows.

I equally think it's time to consider legislation to stop Irish people returning home. Post Christmas could be a disaster if it's still rampant in the UK.

We wont't of course. Mehole will appear on TV strongly urging ex pats not to return home, and urging those that do to stay out of pubs and house parties.

They won't, and we will see a surge in mid January.

And how exactly are you going to make Arlene Foster close all Northern Ireland air and sea ports off from her fellow country folk?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,034 ✭✭✭Amprodude

A second wave of the virus in china is not good news. It started with one case in China as well before. If they don't keep it under countrol. There will be a second wave all around the globe come September.

Tbh, Northern Ireland aren’t really the problem, it’s the mainland UK, USA and Brazil, and any European countries opening up to the Brits, as they travel to the sun in huge numbers. Yes, if someone wants to get to Ireland, the option would be there for them to fly to Belfast and make their way down South from there, but it would be quite a big inconvenience and would deter a lot of people

Watching a programme on BBC earlier about holidays for the Brits this year and a lot were saying they will be going to Northern Ireland because no restrictions and once there can go all over the country. Aside from that the amount of flights coming in and out of Ireland from the beginning of March from a lot of the EU and USA and Russia to just name some for the best part of the lock down with no active follow up checking if adhering to the 14 day self isolation was a joke until they made it a legal requirement, is anyone checking now I wonder.......

What is wrong with our country? Surely the whole point of contact tracing is to find cases and contacts and isolate. How will any of it work if we just allow anyone back into the country? Surely everyone, regardless of what country they come from needs to be quarantined. How hard is that to understand? They're making a complete mess of this. It's beyond me how people think our little country has done so well.

Exactly. How do you even go about contact tracing holiday makers/travellers, who are moving all over the place. They probably even will have left the country and gone home by the time they’d get a positive test, so wouldn’t even be on our list of people’s contacts to trace

What if they come here, feel sick and stay locked up in their hotel room and not say anything? Hotel staff would be exposed and hotel cleaners going from room to room.

We need dedicated quarantine facilities for anyone coming into the country.

They have to be enforced quarantine.
Look at NZ to see how that fares out with people being allowed to roam away from the quarantine with impunity.
You cannot trust people to do the right thing.

Things need to be done on a county by county basis. That way you can put up borders around Northern Ireland without Sinn Fein or the Ra losing the rag. Only travel for work between counties is allowed. If there is a spike in a county, you enforce the county border. If Northern Ireland kicks off again, it will be Louth, Donegal or Monaghan that will get it first.

Shutting the airport and ferry terminals is a no brainer but the EU won't like it. And Mehole isn't exactly a strong leader that would stand up for Irish interests.

Joe Duffy gave air time the other day on Liveline to a Brazilian lad here who's boyfriend was coming over to join him this week on a student visa but Immigration stopped him at the airport and sent him back.
Duffy of course didn't ask the pertinent question as to why Brazilians were still coming into the country! Madness

I think you just have to accept the govt has said we cant keep our borders locked down We are going to get people bringing it in to Ireland and there is nothing we can do about it if that is what has been decided economically. People will go on holiday and bring it back. That cant be stopped People are inherently selfish and if they feel it is no threat to them or theirs they wont care about anyone else. People with money will demand openings despite risk and that will happen bcos of greed Unfortunately its a selfish world and poor and vunerable people will die until there is a vaccine.

On a student visa and no colleges open? How lovely.

Foret quarantine its never happening. Its mitigation and only about the rich and greedy and the idiots that buy into it and don't have a penny but want to get to the pub quick and to Spain to the irish pub with their Pennys clothes. This is the way of the world Im afraid and until the virus has gone id suggest you keep 2 metres away, don't go in to enclose spaces for more than 15 mins and fingers crossed for a vaccine soon.

We don't have to have our borders locked down. We need dedicated and enforced quarantine facilities. Not let people roam free as soon as they get off the plane. If that doesn't sound fair, tough sh!t.

But then Leo won't be able to cite the fact he kept the borders open at all times when he's going for the big EU/UN job in the near future!

The Americas (all of them) are seriously skewing that number though no?

Apart from Sweden, Europe have pretty much controlled it now

I'm less concerned about Sweden and more about our nearest neighbour whose new case and death per capita rates are many multiples of ours, yesterday we had 8 new cases, they had 1,115, that's over 10 times our rate per capita.

We didn't stop the people coming from Italy at the outset of the virus here. We didn't stop people who attended mass gatherings in the UK returning to Ireland . We didn't stop world wide flights including people from China in March, That is how the virus got in. We are now allowing mass travel again. We don't have strict quarantine. we are reducing social distancing to 1 metre which is a joke and may as well be nothing. If there is a second wave we are getting it no bother. The govt know this but money for those who have it will always win out.

And the Brits are very much closer to us and they will be coming on mass very soon to the hotels and pubs of Ireland and will be welcomed with open arms don't worry about it.

Serious question: how can this be brought from a discussion on an internet forum to action being taken?

Write to a Local TD we know well?

I honestly think our open and very lax Airport control is going to come back to bite us hard

Not just to holiday here but to go on to Europe as well to avoid restrictions.
