St reports on front page today the Sport Ireland is looking towards life after the lockdown and is currently classifying activities by risk - low, medium and high.

Article says Sports Minister, Brendan Griffin said Sport Ireland classified different sports - golf, tennis, athletics, showjumping, bowling, badminton, archery, cycling and canoeing are all classed as low-risk. No mention of shooting. Can't find anything about this classification on sportsireland.ie

Do our reps need to get onto this?

We rarely get mentioned, but yes, i'd say they need to make sure we're included.

Whatever about crowds at a range, which i still think is not detrimental, how about a lad out on his own for a few hours int he field, driving to his permissions on his own and coming home the same way. Seen a chap in England got arrested for fishing. He was on his own boat, on a lake, and drove to and from the lake on his own but was arrested for breaking the lockdown.

On a side note i see the Football Association in the UK is also discussing this. Even with a view to hold "closed door" matches which are televised.

I understand the lockdown and agree that it needs to be done to protect the most vulnerable in our society, and while not even close to being qualified to make a judgement on pandemic matters, my own opinion would be that those who are on the lowest end of the risk scale should be allowed to do activities to help keep them mentally well during this current event and that pose no risk whatsoever to others.

Hunting, shooting, fishing, golfing, cycling, etc. can all be done so long as people stay mostly to their own or with someone form their household and don't interact with anyone else while out doing what they are doing.

By the by, while i have ya, is there any truth to the "news" about Sweden? They say Sweden is close to herd immunity as they locked away the most vulnerable and allowed the rest to mingle, albeit not a mass scales. Is this a viable option? Does it work? Also would such a thing be better in terms of allowing most people to either get infected and develop immunity as opposed to locking everyone away and trying to wait for a vaccine?

I’m not pretending to be any kind of expert on this, either and I did not know that Sweden had isolated it’s vulnerable, but that sounds logical if you are pursuing a relaxed type of lockdown, as they have been doing.

All I know is that Covid-19 is a serious virus that too often leads to viral pneumonia and it has serious consequences. It is not just a bad ‘flu.

Would prefer the vaccine route, myself - but that may be too big an ask, saw reports that there are 3 strains (manageable, from a vaccine perspective) but also saw another mentioning there are about 30 strains, which is problematic, if true- there’s so much unfiltered info going around that it’s gotten really hard to separate fact from fiction.

The problem I see with herd immunity is that the vulnerable will still be vulnerable and the only solution for them is a working vaccine.

Covid 19 has 4 strains, A,B,C,D, the most potent strain produces 270 times the viral load as the least potent strain and looking at the type of complications coming from people that have recovered from it like strokes in younger people, Guillain-Barre syndrome and other serious health issues I think that while it is tempting to allow people to circulate the risks are still very high if you contract the virus.
It is definitely not an illness to be trifled with and while solitary activities are not likely to spread it, if you are unfortunate enough to injure yourself and require medical treatment, is a hospital a place you would really like to be at this time?

I am actually in a hospital at the moment, with a suspected minor heart attack since Sat lunchtime!TBH,it is actually very safe. They are doing exemplery work here on prevention, hygeine and going thru PPE like nobodys busisness. In fact they wish people with serious problems would show up rather than staying away so they can be attended to as well.FWICS they have a good grip on this in UL anyway.

So I wouldn't put that down as a stopper on wanting to go back shooting.
    Look at it like this;

We dont have any 19th hole in our clubs to be socialising in .
We generally social distance when handling firearms or shoot anyway.
We are a non contact sport.
Hunting is as solitary as you can get .
A massive crowded event in shooting in Ireland is about 100 people.

We might not have a range within 2kms of our houses, but dothe majority of golfers, and all the rest have the same facilities on their doorstep too?
Get onto NARGC and NASRPC and get our ranges open!

Thats if IKEA land is telling the truth on its statistics.Id be sceptical of a country wher ther are now more grenades going off than NI on a bad day in the 1970s.But there are some studies in Israel and the US that does suggest it is pointless doing a lockdown as it seems to be that this virus must run its course irrespective in the pouplation and that also the lockdown of a healthy pouplation is also dangerous for its immune system too.We need germs and viruses to be healthy ourselves,as our systems need attacks to generate defences in our immunity.
So locking us away might be doing our health no good either.

The HSE and thier counterparts are still not up to speed with the way in which this virus acts within the community. This is not a criticism of them. its a reality check. They have done a great job with the co-operation of the communities in stemming the tide of infection rates. This has more importantly saved the hospitals from potential collapse as seen in other countries. But again thier full understanding of the various vector for which this virus can be transmitted is still not fully known.

Media reports are giving out vauge or distorted messages such as '....... country to open soon'. Usually a country that is a popular holiday destination. The reality is when they say 'reopen' it means to alleviate some of the lock down measures, not to fling open every holiday resort in situ. There is a small delusional group of individuals expecting to be on s forgein beech somewhere over the comming months. There are talks of potentially letting in forgein tourists into certain countries, under stricter controls then pre covid 19, as early as October.

Fecking hell I'm gaging to go for a shot but I have more pressing issues to contend with such as getting a puncture on my 4x4 fixed. If this goes on any longer I'll have to give in and pay between €70 -€120 to have a nail puncure repaired. My mate has already forked out €70 for a call out fix.

I'm hoping to see some restrictions lifted and some more service buisnesses open up. But it will be a gradual process.

The RO would need binoculars to be able to see if your chamber is empty from six feet away during a ceasefire. :D

Indeed,t'would be beyond human endevours to stick a large breech flag like those used on aircraft,to make sure the critical points are secured in the empty chamber by the shooter when finished or cease fire is called and to hold aloft his rifle/shotgun or handgun at arms length with the slide backor open cylinderfor distance inspection, and to follow thu verbal commands to secure or make ready/fire,and to direct by the numbers entry and exit to your designated firing points.Fierce difficult alright.

Just a quick reply regarding Sweden as mention earlier:

They've now more deaths per million pop than Ireland, they're 7th in the world for deaths per pop, while we are 8th (this is not including islands and principalities with below 100,000 population). It looked like they're idea of only locking up the vulnerable worked for a while but then the deaths just started piling up and their hospitals got overwhelmed, someone I know over there claims that people over 60 aren't given ventilators.

Also keep in mind we don't know for how long anyone is even immune, and there's some debate as to whether people are getting reinfected. Also keep in mind there are multiple strains, just like the flu, and if you're immune to one it does not mean you're immune to the others.

I am also weary of the herd immunity idea because I see the media is now pushing the idea of using tracking apps as a way out, perhaps leaning on people's desperation. One one medical professor saying that herd immunity + a tracking app will be out way out of this...I'm personally not a fan of that idea.

Not to be gloom and doom, that's just my dumb opinion on the matter.

As for going back to shooting, I'd imagine we'd only be allowed to go back to the range no sooner than mid June or early July.

    Confused.
The new easing of restrictions has been published. Phase 1 is things like golf and tennis can open, no more than 4 in a group. I know my local clay shoot is making plans to open, however its not till Phase 2 that you can travel up to 20 km from home,
My clay shoot is more than 20km away, as is golf course as is pretty much anything else. So about as much use as a chocolate Tea Pot

    From France via Google translate....

    Dear hunter friends,

We hope that you and your loved ones are doing well in this complicated environment for everyone. Admittedly, France’s gradual de-containment is at work, but we all know that it will take a long time to return to a normal situation and the journey strewn with pitfalls.
On this subject, Hunting can resume these activities, we have just had official confirmation! Hunting is not subject to any special regime. Which means that everything will start again tomorrow in a "normal" way. You can calmly resume your hunting, trapping, hunting and destruction activities. The confinement being lifted, these are the general rules relating to travel which apply (no certificate within a hundred kilometers, or in the department, with proof of address; no restriction on the reasons for travel under these conditions) ; trapping and destruction are possible subject to compliance with the regulations related to these activities, and barrier gestures.

The federation also wishes to tell you that the hunting season should unfold quite normally, applying barrier gestures as long as they are necessary, and that hunting will start well in early June. These barrier gestures are also compatible with all of our hunts, individual or collective. You can also take your new validations for the next season from the first days of June. A letter specifying all this as well as our guide for the 2020/21 hunting season and your collection book will be sent to you in the coming days.
We all wish you excellent de-containment, reminding you that barrier actions are essential for everyone's health and future. Good health and good luck to all.

    Your Federation of Gers Hunters
