rowing oar question

    Hey everyone,

    I am a mechanical engineering student. I am currently working on a project for my materials subject but i am having trouble find the information i need online.

    My project is to look at the materials used in rowing oars. I am struggling to find simple dimensions for an oar online.

    if someone could answer a few questions for me i would be forever in your debt.

    what i am looking at is a sweeping oar made from carbon fiber that is a ultralight stiff model. my general questions are:

    1. Are oars hollow?
    2. what is the thickness of the shaft?
    3. are the handle, button, sleeve and shaft all made of the same material?

    any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

    My apologies if any of the terminology is wrong

    Don't know much about it but the first thing that comes to mind is what type of vessel will they be used on and what length would that vessel be?

    Google skull oars the first result was a company in carlow that makes oars. They have an enquiries form linked to their site (which, by the way seems to answer most of your questions, albeit specific to their design and may vary across manufacturere).

    From my recollection of reaching out to companies related to my area of study (also mech eng but back in the dark and distant past) they tend to be more than happy to assist you in your research.

    We might need a bit more info on what you are looking for to give you better advice, wooden oar's can be made from all sorts of wood depending on what you want them for Douglas fir would be lighter Ash and Oak stronger and heavier. Modern ors can be made from Fiberglass, Aluminium or carbon fibers, if they are made on a mould "custom made" they will probably have a foam core this will also add strength a bit like a surfboard , carbon fiber is not very flexible so the blade might be made of kevlar or fiberglass.
