Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    ... I'm thinking of treating myself to a custom build. Opinions welcome.

    A few notes:

    - I don't hunt, this will be strictly for target work.
    - Open to any non restricted caliber
    - Budget would be maybe 3k (not including optics)

    I recognise this is a bit of a dream thread, but we all need a bit of fantasy at the moment, and I am thinking of getting a custom built. So, go nuts.

    I'd love to go for another 308 build like i had before but with a few changes.
    • Defiance Tenacity action (308) with 20 moa rail
    • Bartlein 32" Heavy Match taper, fluted, 5R, 1:10 twist
    • Jewell BRBR trigger
    • Joe West or Masterclass stock (high gloss/walnut) fully bedded & adjustable cheek piece and 3 way butt pad

    There is part of me that would like to try something new, to me, like 6.5x284 or 6XC, but part of me would love a well build target rifle in something like a 223 but solely for medium to long range. Something like:
    • BAT M action
    • 28" Bartlein sports taper, 4R, 1:7.5 twist
    • Bix & Andy trigger
    • McMillan XIT stock with all the bells and whistles.

    Think i'm gone too far into dream land as the actions on both would eat up over 50% of your budget, and then some.

    I don't know alot about custom rifles but I'd go for a triggertech trigger. I have it and the break is just exceptional. Zero creep and you can make it very light.

    I have owned a lot of triggers, and the Triggertech standard surprised me the most , very smooth and sharp break.

    Caliber - .223
    Action - Barnard Model S, left handed
    Barrel - Any of the top makers, 26 inches long, Remington varmint profile
    Stock - McMillan A3
    Trigger - Timney Calvin Elite

    Why limit yourself to a non-restricted calibre? They aren't that much more difficult to license.

    Might have more to do with the ranges you can shoot them on and the competitions they can be used in.

    F-Class doesn't allow any caliber over 8mm, most sporting leagues are unrestricted calibers, and only ranges of 300+ mtrs can allow shooting of HME rifles.

    Couple of guys have M1s at Midlands. Often thought I'd love to have one, but thought they'd be a pain in the giblets to license.

    Beenaving a lot of money lately so I'm thinking if a rifle or new shotgun myself.
    Shotgun wise inwanted thinking a semi auto so I'm looking at a few beretta online in several different places
    Rifle wise I'm.looking at a tikka 243

    I'd love a custom however currently it's hard to justify. I have a Remington 700 VSF in .223, stuck a Timney Calvin Elite into it and it stacks bullets in on top of each other. Unfortunately it's 1:12 twist and the bolt is on the wrong side. Apart from getting it threaded and dropping in the trigger it is stock.

    You just have to be persistent and as my local FAO said"Have all the answers untill he gets tired of asking questions." In a very,very perverse way,it is proably better that they do this,as it will stop the "jus want one loike,for the craic" crowd getting one and then doing somthing stupid with it.[As if there hasn't been some tools about already with them] and wrecking it for those that have . I'm not trying to discourge ,or being selfish to anyone wanting one.Just saying,you gotta be prepared to work abit harder for one,as they are precived as a higher risk gun than most...

    As we dont know how,where and when and under what circumstances they might enact the 2017 statue revoking any issued post 17 new liscenses, I ASSume it is proably a numbers game and maybe they were expecting a surge like the handguns in 2006 that hasn't materialised and who is going to risk losing a couple of grand on one of these being confiscated minus compo? So I wouldnt invest anything mre than a grand in the guns price around here .

    As for what I would like,nothing special really.
    A Marlin camp rifle in 9mm or a new Ruger PC that can take Glock mags for Bulseye 360.Am also tickled by a Ruger mini14 in stainless or for just plain out weirdness A Franchi PARA in .22lr
    Its a take down rifle made in the 1980s and only 8000 were ever made.Came in a nice case with a scope and sling.

    For my retirement I've promised myself a Blazer , something around the lines of a R8 , fine wood and a good multipurpose scope coiming in at around 4kg
    But the idea of a Kipplauf single shot has me intrigued. Something like the Merkel K3 Stutzen comes in at approx 2.4Kg bare bones, again stick a nice multi purpose scope on it and your still carrying a light rifle.
    By the time I retire I can't see myself dragging two hybrids off the hill at the same time, so a single shot will surfice.

    My target/hunting rifles at the moment. 308, 6.5 Creedmoor, 300WM

    I also have a fantastic new T3 actioned semi custom with a 24" US Hawk Hill cut barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor Marksman profile that I have no use for at this time. These are very special barrels that are hand lapped to a certain length, in this case made as a 24" barrel from the machine. This rifle is wasted on me. It could be matched with a custom made E-Tac3-4 stock.

    I m hoping muntjac will be plentiful at that stage as well, may consider a single shot in a similar light.

    A 10 shot .22 rifle,thats even harder to reload than a Ruger 10/22 as it is tube fed in the buttstock....Yeah,could see probs alright.:)

    What about a nice AR 7 survival rifle ? Don't see anything about it that would make it difficult to licence.

    Have the same 5/8x24 thread an all and can swop mods around. Have two JD224 308 which are bored out a bit, one is the version with the large hole in the back for large barrels. The other normal. The mod on the 300 is an old A-Tec modular steel mod that it used if many shots are fired.

    At the time,definately not,as it came from a dealer,who had two of them in stock.Whether this has changed in the meantime ...I would hope so,as it 19 years ago,so the DOJ staff has been recycled a few times since then.
