Coronavirus antibody test could be available within days

The UK government has ordered more than 3 million finger prick antibody tests that could be ready in a matter of days. The tests could reveal whether someone had covid-19, but they are being checked first to show that they work properly. It is also still not known whether it’s possible to develop long-lasting immunity to the coronavirus.

They've stopped testing the backlog, to the point that even if you fit the new criteria and we're referred by your GP, you have to call your GP and be referred again

My sister has nobody to mind her son as she is civil service and they can't work from home. I'm a bit nervous about taking him as I have literally not been outside the house.

But what do you do. We have to chip in to help but if he is a carrier we are all spreading around the family even if we are not seeing each other.

How about this for a depressing thought - sooner rather than later, some third world country is going to have to cope with both covid and some sort of natural disaster

well if one can wait 2-3 weeks and they still insist to be tested its propably waste of a test, given how long virus been out its hard to believe that were only been hit in March, and with every stat stating that theres only good few dozen in critical seems were not Mainland europe and dont follow same path.

i get people get aroused to see more cases but if hse puts only priority to test most fitting its seem fair, as given we should see good few mass recoveries at this stage where 1500 cases isnt correct as many would be off the list or recovered themselves at home.

It's a bit upsetting to hear how family, friends, and everyone online seem to have decided that everyone who WAS waiting to be tested but doesn't fit the new priority criteria was a lying, time-wasting, hypochondriac and not just people who did feel unwell and were just following the advice of the HSE. I feel god awful today coughing and my chest is on fire but i'm "not even sick"

Had that torn feeling too but I'm actually glad to be able to get out of the house, and obviously still getting paid and having a job is a big plus.

We are all being encouraged to take a weeks holiday staggered over April and May so will definitely be doing that at some stage just to kick back and chill.

And they do have a huge problem with that in places like South Africa.

Don't think anyone has suggested that. Some cases maybe, but we need to recognise that may who have or indeed have already had, this virus will go undiagnosed

The "tested" figures were and are pretty meaningless

I hope people on treatment will be OK.

I'm HIV+ but treatment is good and my cd4 count is healthy. Its more the capacity of the health system in developing countries that I would worry about.

The medical argument for it is the low number of positives and the impossibility of testing so many people. In recent days they have mentioned flu' being about as well.

A group of youths spat in the face of an RSPCA officer and shouted “have corona bitch”, as she tried to rescue a swan, the animal charity have said.

Leanne Honess-Heather was helping the bird, which had become tangled in a fishing line, when five teenagers – aged around 16 – approached her close to Rush Lyvars Fishing Lake in Hedon, Hull.

Honess-Heather said she asked them to stand back before the “really upsetting” incident occurred.

“They seemed to take offence to this, which led to two of the group spitting directly into my face, going in my mouth and eyes, as they yelled ‘have corona bitch’ at me,” she said.

“Like many other frontline services, most of my team are still out during this crisis, trying our best to continue to do our job, tending to, collecting and rescuing injured animals.

The swan, which had no long-term injuries after being cut free from the line, was released after being checked over by a vet.

The RSPCA is providing an emergency-only service to animals during the coronavirus pandemic.
