Agree on the Monksland no brainer with the free retail units and scuppered plans for a new retail park. Place has the footfall and is growing but supervalu and other vested interests are holding it back from becoming a great area.

It's a bit manky looking alright, and there's the unused field across the road.

I understand Mr Price may move their retail unit to their warehouse. Talks of a retail park going in on the Diskin Centre. With so much empty retail units over in Monksland you would wonder about the logic. Time will tell. Another issue would be traffic.

Only 2 or 3 are vacant at the moment. 3 of the units are used for non-retail commercial use.

Can’t get any more central than the Sheraton. It’s attached to the shopping centre. The prince of Wales and the radisson are within easy walking distance either.

seems like the midlands has been escaping this virus so far. Announcements on confirmed cases in south, east and west. I wonder is it done provincially?

They're too vague with the locations to be of any real use to anyone.

Agreed, even county by county would give some idea how close infection is. I know they can't breach patient confidentiality but that information would alleviate a lot of stress that I think all people are feeling.

They plan to release it on a county by county basis soon. Was stated yesterday or the day before in their press conference

Would make more sense to release on a town by town basis, just saying Roscommon for example, leaves you to wonder whether it's Monkslands or Boyle?

there are idiots out there who would see their county isn't on the list and continue on regardless

Sure why not name them altogether with the eircode! We've enough to be worrying about without the minute level of detail some people are demanding. Some counties will fare better than others, and we don't want complacency to set in anywhere.

No need for the sark/ town level is as precise as it needs to be.

Town level would be too easy for residents of that town to break confidentiality which patients are entitled to. How often do lottery winners ever stay truly anonymous within their area.
From what I understand from Kinvarra, health officials trace possible contacts without the use of the media.

Ireland is so small and we're so inter connected, there's no point in naming individual towns. 10's of thousands commute daily east and west in both directions for university and work. The incubation time is quiet long, so chance of it spreading is relatively high. We know people are positive some time between 5 and 7 days after they acquired it and had been spreading it themselves. We're only 5 days into school lock down. Combined with more testing, we'll see a massive spike over next few days. This is not something to panic over.

It's invisible to people, so you're not over reacting to assume it's in Athlone already. Just self isolate as instructed and that minimises community transmission. It's amazing amount of families visiting other families over weekend. People just not understanding or taking the restrictions seriously.

I personally think that because the midlands is sparsely populated, the resources for testing people have simply not been deployed here, hence no confirmed cases.

No bugs found doesn't mean no bugs there

There's a pop-up testing service now available in the grounds of St Lomans in Mullingar.

Also, anyone with symptoms / have been in contact with the infection have been able to get tested for many days now.

However, your "No bugs found doesn't mean no bugs there" point is valid throughout most of the world. I don't think anyone (except possibly South Korea) is testing everyone to assess the full extent of the infection.

It concerns me that nobody has said "case found in Athlone" or even "case found in midlands" to wake people up here. Alot of complacency seen on a drive through town earlier.

there was a testing centre in Mullingar over the weekend

Finding it extremely weird that nobody has tested positive there yet. Although cases take few days to be given a verdict so maybe next day or 2 will be eye opener.

id say there is no midlands subsection, anyone testing positive in Athlone will be declared as being in the east maybe?

    East, West; South.

Although not sure how Cavan and Monaghan would be classified either

They give statistics for the North-West.

Although geographically incorrect, is it possible this will include all southern counties of ulster?

Would be very hard to believe that no counties have it in midlands.

Testing centre in Athlone now on the grounds of St Vincent's hospital. It also said in the Westmeath Indo today that we're going to get a county-by-county breakdown of the infections later in the week.

Which will be annoying as the town is very split between counties.

Saying big jump in Westmeath may be Mully as opposed to Athlone. Similarly Roscommon could mean Boyle sted of Monksland etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,933 ✭✭✭Blanco100

    7 confirmed cases in Westmeath

Roscommon not stated in the breakdown which means it has less than 5. Only 3 counties without a case, Laois, Leitrim and Monaghan.

    Case in Laois now unfortunately.

Test centre being constructed in Tullamore this week as well.

Can anyone advise what situation like in Mullingar hospital. My elderly parent is very unwell with a non-covid 19 condition but as a family very reluctant to have hospitalised. Our fear is we will never see them again if hospital goes into emergency state in coming weeks and we would assume elderly would not be a priority ??

Could you try a GP out of hours service?
