Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    I literally so no connection with Tinfoil/5G unless you're trying to make out I'm sort of conspiracy theorist for wanting to have different opening and closing times for nightlife.

    No victim complex here. Just a bit incredulous why some people here would rather **** in their hands and clap rather than do something proactive about the night scene? Why do all have to close at the same time?

    Why do they need masses of drunken idiots to flood the one location at the one time. Surely you see the potential problem?

    No problem as it's 2AM in the morning, all shops are closed, most people are in bed.

    If it was 3 in the day it would be a problem.

    The streets of any town or city is always gonna be a bit sketchy after the pubs and clubs finish. And it has always been that way TBH. When I started going out first The Bridge Hotel (or Breens as it was known locally) was the centre of Waterford's nightlife. There was huge crowds down that side of town and plenty of argy bargy @ times too! The nearest chipper was Supermacs and there was always a congregation of well oiled and hungry people lingering on into the early hours at the weekend. Pretty much the same as John St these days but in a different part of town.

    With regards to the nightlife being concentrated in the John St area I think that this is out of the control of any of the concerned stakeholders. There was a time that the nightlife was quite spread out around the town. Different clubs for differing styles. The Roxy in O'Connell St; Preachers in John St; The Bridge Hotel; Flow Motion & Flare in Conduit Lane; The Reg; The Metroland. Even 'The Forum' in the early 00's was quite adrift from the so called hub @ John St. As is quite apparent from the list all of the nightclubs mentioned are now defunct and closed. Plus the way people socialise has changed in that time.

    All this aside you are always going to have idiots no matter what type of system you implement. Some people are happy drunks and some are aggressive. That is the nature of alcohol. Blame society or who you want but you can't change human nature. You cannot predict what anyone is capable of doing.

    If there's violence and innocent people are being assaulted, it's a problem whatever time of the day it happens. I have absolutely no idea these days how bad things are around town at that hour of the night. However, I suspect that, while it's not a new thing it's probably a bit worse than it was in the past simply because people have a bit more money to spend on alcohol and drugs. Put more alcohol and drugs into a bunch of people at that hour of the night and you can be pretty sure that things will be worse. And as Flow Motion points out, the nightclub/late bar scene in Waterford is much less spread out around town nowadays. Or maybe I'm just getting old

    What's to be done? I'm really not sure. More guards, perhaps?

    One thing that does surprise me a bit is the hostility toward the OP. By all means disagree with him and say that things aren't so bad at that hour or point out that it's little different here from the rest of the country, but I think he's entitled to raise the issue and he makes a fair point.

    Very bitter people there alright, never anywhere else have I encountered such people, A lot of sound people there too but the hatred shown to those who don't conform there has to be witnessed to believe it.

    Absolutely. By far the worst place iv ever lived the locals are unreal. unfortunately the sound people are afraid to say anything less they get that sort of treatment. Any way. Whats going to come out about that town in the next year will have the whole of Ireland avoiding it. Twin peaks has nothing on Clonmel.

    A hurler on the ditch is about the least useful at helping solve any problems funnily enough

    Most close in or around 2 and 2.30. I'm not a night club owner so bright a hurler on the ditch doesn't really come into it.

    You're pointing out a problem, that is bothering you a hell of a lot and you have no solution to offer to it. Are you just having a moan for the sake of it?

    I just don't see the point of this, what would you like to see done as a reasonable solution to your problem?

    Has this solution been tried elsewhere and how has it worked or what would suggest tweaked to make it work on manor street?

    Why does addressing a serious issue have to come across as moaning? It's not me who's moaning.

    Yes the solution is basically the status quo in most of Europe which is sequential closing times.Strict licensing laws here do not lead to a decrease in alcohol consumption. Here's some evidence backing my claim from the Irish Nightclub Industry Association (2009).

    "NSRA (2004: Q10) provides strong support for
    introduction of the staggered (sequential) closing
    time system. According to the survey data,
    sequential closing times are believed to be the
    second most effective non-penal means for
    preventing drunkenness in public places (8%) and
    the most preferred way of combating public
    drunkenness without resorting to direct restrictions
    on alcohol consumption."

    Yeah id agree with this, i used to go to the Junction when it was open, then the forum. Back in the day (a while back) I always noticed it was either people getting kicked out of night clubs and the fight would spill out on the street or few too taxis for too many people, someone making some comment in a chipper that was taken up wrong.
