Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Irish Water rates cut leaves council with financial emergency

    Big news tomorrow in Waterford will be this:
    Councillors have just been informed Waterford Council is facing a financial emergency after being told of a potential cut of €3.3 million in rates payable by Irish Water.
    If this goes ahead there will be a massive loss of revenue that would force Waterford City and County Council to cut expenditure on Roads, Festivals, Arts and Community Grants - and maybe more!

    Would privatising it work any better, defunding public services that some wish to privatise is common practice

    Nope, public ownership in Ireland just means you're getting shafted by the state rather than private "enterprise"

    Public ownership means a portion of society will pay for others, and all will continue to waste the 'free' resource.

    a perfect response in fairness, theres no easy solution here, but id think id rather keep it in public ownership, but with conservation methods in place, including metering

    Councillors also blocked any increase in property tax because they were afraid of losing votes. So councillors are making decisions on what gets them votes instead of what is best for the city and county. This fixed property tax rate has been detrimental to services for years now.
