Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Is it true that it is illegal to shoot at practice targets outside of a registered shooting range?

    There was a thread on this not too long ago and from what I remember yes it is not allowed.

    Perfectly legal if the targets are clays and you’re using a shotgun.

    Also ok to be "zeroing" as far as I know, and again as long as it is acutaly zeroing. A bit of a grey area ?

    Any target shooting of rifles or pistols outside of an authorised range is illegal, including zeroing as it's classed as target shooting.

    As said above clays are the exception as clay pigeon shooting is not classed as target shooting (obviously with a shotgun).

    Please review the Commissioners Guidelines 2018.

    It specifically refers to the need to check ones zero and issues to consider in doing so page 24.

    The Garda Commissioner's guidelines have made it clear for members of AGS that anyone "caught" zeroing outside a range be given leeway because the Minister made such illegal in 2008 (iirc) when he made target shooting outside a range illegal and when questioned about zeroing afterwards admitted his intent was not to ban zeroing (a safety practice) but yet never changed the law to reflect this.

    So while it is still illegal leeway will be given under "common sense law". Frankly if a member of AGS were so inclined they could "do you" as the law is on their side. It all depends on not abusing it. One or even two lads firing a couple of shots is zeroing. 15 lads firing hundreds of rounds all day, well a harder case to make i'd imagine.

    If you have all the boxes (Authorised Club/Range, Game Shooting & Other - vermin) ticked in section 4.2 when applying for your license, I believe you are covered.

    No, you're not. Not trying to be "buzz killington", but there is nothing to tick or apply for that allows you to ignore/supersede the legislation.

    If you tick range/target shooting on the FCA1 then you're a member of a range, and hence have a place to shoot.

    Seriously lads, this is a "non issue". The Commissioner's guidelines have effectively said keep it sensible and we'll leave you alone. Unless the firearms act is amended that is the best we can hope for, and it seems to work.

    Which of those are you suggesting describes zeroing? Because it doesn’t fit any for me.

    I agree with Cass, it’s strictly speaking illegal, but guidelines are to permit as it’s an unintended catch by a law with other intentions.
