Flash of lightning just now in West cork, not sure where it striked but blitzortung shows ones just off the coast. Wasn't on land anyway, didn't hear thunder.

There's the thunder! Sounds off in the distance over the sea and the flash isn't bright but opened my window and heard it.

Edit: ok there's a few alright. Hope it makes it to land!

One aircraft diverted (Aer Lingus Regional), and as a result the next flight on this aircraft was cancelled. That's the only disruption.

2 aircraft just touched down without issue.

Mad that. Dry here in Ashford. Am looking at radar and it should have been lashing here for last while. And nada except a drop or two. Can anyone tell me why that is?

High based rain picked up by the radar that doesn't reach the ground
Raining away here in Arklow, not heavy about 2mm in the last hour and a half
Its getting a little bit heavier

Augers well for overnight in the southeast and east so and this evenings ECM assessment of things,if its lightning we want, might get to test my new black out drapes later as more high cold clouds tops meander up from Biscay where they've been sparking all day?
    No chance :D:D

Potentially 40mm of rain over a few hours, followed by potentially another 10-30mm in localised thunderstorms is most definitely a serious event if you're in a flood-prone area. Such as I am in Mountmellick.
Certainly a potentially serious event for us and so the council have been out cleaning drains in advance.
I can recall 3 other late summer deluges that caused serious worry here. The last being September 2010.
The serious flooding of Mountmellicj in November 2017 was caused by a 40mm deluge overnight over say 6 hours.
So please don't Pooh Pooh a rain event if you have never faced flooding before. While we're all weather freaks, it's not all ****s and giggles.

Quite active across the southwest and off the southern coast now with many verified strikes in the last half hour.

How this holds together and develops further as it moves north is key.

Might be an interesting few hours ahead.
