    We kind-of missed the whole Mr. Rogers era here in Europe, but Americans are going to lap this up, and I see a strong chance of Oscar #3 for Tom.

    Definitely missed it here. Looks like a proper nostalgia trip for those who remember him. Tom Hanks doesn't tend to let down in areas like this.

    Cool to see Matthew Rhys getting more work after The Americans!

    Yeah, I never saw the show either. Suspect this may flop overseas, but do very good business in the US. Rodgers is absolutely beloved over there. There's an utterly charming (though likely apocryphal) story about his car being returned by thieves when they realised it was his.

    So I didn't grow up in the US, can someone give a potted history as to what the fascination with Mr. Rogers is?

    He seemed to be a gentle children's TV presenter, is there more to it than that? Though watching that doc. trailer as I type, I'm sensing the appeal, he seems an unrealistically decent human being.

    I don't quite understand it myself, but the story is something like this: he was quite religious as a young man, studying to be a Presbyterian minister, when he saw a TV at his parents' house. He hated what he saw on it so much that he decided to get involved with making shows, the kind he thought TV needed. So he got a job at NBC and worked on various shows, including some for children. After further study in to child development, and more time developing puppet shows, he got really good at understanding young children, and soon he was persuaded to present a show himself.

    His persona was basically the nice neighbour who you felt you could talk to, and his show covered some difficult topics, such as death, in a way that young kids could relate to. The "nice neighbour" thing took over his life, basically, but by all accounts it was genuine. If you look at the American Zeitgeist, everything going on in politics and the media, the idea of some timeless, good old-fashioned neighbourliness must look pretty attractive right now.

    The documentary is well worth a look. I was waiting for horrific revelations but nope, he was a genuinely wonderful guy.

    He is one of those quintessential children presenters that spanned generations that was a genuine good guy no drama no scandal nothing which is rare
