Hi all,

    Does anyone know what colour and font was used on the number plates of new cars in 1989.


    What was the common style?

    Black was the colour of the font, as now.

    From 1987-91, registration plates were similar to current ones, but only displayed year, city/county code and serial number. They did not have hyphens, the county name in Irish or EU flag/IRL image. I don't think the black border was a requirement. Some plates had the car dealer name, but this wasn't legal.

    The following city/county codes were also in use. 
    L	Limerick City
LK	Limerick County
TN	Tipperary North
TS	Tipperary South
W	Waterford City
WD	Waterford County
WW	Wicklow County

    By that year perspex plates had taken over from pressed. I have an 89 car on the original perspex plates with the garage details included. Black font on white background.

    I'm think of going with something like these, though I need a square one also.

    I rather it without the black border, did the perspex ones of the day all have a black border?

    Anyone know of a company that does square ones also.

    Metal plates with the numbers printed/stuck on rather than pressed were quite common in 1989.

    Dealer plates were starting to make an appearance at that savage too I think which would be clear Perspex with a reflective stuck on the back.

    ZV for imported classics was introduced iirc in 1987. So it wasn't the last, it is the last of the old format

    I have a 67 DL xxx reg (VW beetle) and am thinking of changing for a ZV. I believe this is still possible? But no going back (as I understand).
    What is the general consensus on the number plates, are most people shamed by vintage year-county- plates? Is this common or do people really care? Just wondering what the craic with them is.

    I drive an old crappy mitsubishi with my old euro plate so i dont mind,but if your car is has been restored and looking super hot then the old style would suit it better.

    My view is, pre 86 zv, post 86 year based..

    But its up to personal taste!!

    Ok, thanks for the info guys. if I were to go with the zv, is this likely to have a eight or ten numbers after it? Is it simply a matter of consecutive numbers as each vehicle is registered into the state or is there a numeric prefix for each county?

    Others will know where it's currently at in terms of sequence. But it's zv for the entire country.

    There is a ZV series allocated to each County.
    I would go for 89X xxxx * personally for any 87 and later car imported. Not keen on ZV, but really it makes very little difference. I would not go for Euro plates at all

    * read that back...you know what I mean :-)

    Great info thanks guys. I’ll mull it over, perhaps a nice silver on black age related plate would look ok, only 3 numbers after year&county. Not really keen on a whole heap of digits after the zv. I do like obvious the county association though. Hmm.

    You will have up to 5 digits after the 'ZV'. Doubt many counties, if any, have any of the 4 digit allocation left.

    KevR Great info. I have been on to wicklow co.co. They were very helpful but were not familiar with zv reg's. I think from your chart a DUBLIN address would get ZV 11--- , rather than a WICKLOW ZV88---. Starting with 11 makes a neater plate. Sensible replies. Thank you!
