Movies that are so bad they are good....

Don't know what put this into my head just now.

Some time ago my sister called me. Her son was a huge Firefly fan and she was getting him Serenity on DVD. Conversation went like this:

Sister:"It's here for a tenner but with the movie "Stealth" in a package for 12. Which should I go for?"
Me: "Go for the one with Stealth. 100%"
Sister: "Oh, is that good?"
Me: "Oh God no. It's GARBAGE! He'll love it!"

So what's the first "So bad it's good" movie that pops into your head.

Boards doesn't like simply lists threads so maybe explain why this turd rates so highly

I'll start with Stealth.

For me, a SBIG movie has to have some characteristics:

Awful dialogue that you can finish before they do ("What's it doing?". "Downloading songs off the Internet for it's mission". "What songs?". Altogether now: "ALL of them")
One dimensional "characters" who serve ONE purpose: Be hot - Male. Be hot - Female. Die - Hot minority. Josh Lucas, Jessica Biel ...... Jamie Foxx.
More than one montage. Many movies have a montage but the more montages a movie has the higher the SBIG rating.
Nu-metal soundtrack
Edit: One last thing: Has to be played TOTALLY straight. No nudge nudge wink wink. Isn't this stupid fun? These movies must think they are masterpieces

So whaddya think? What pops into your heads? (I predict a lot of Bayhem coming......)

The Room is the epitome of this trope. It's meant to be a serious film with dramatic elements but it is so inept that it becomes a legitimately hilarious movie in complete contrast to the original intentions.

I love a Steven Seagal movie.

A couple of them are actually good (Under Seige, On Deadly Ground), but almost all the rest fall firmly into the guilty pleasure category.

I also rewatched the recent Baywatch movie. I know it's truly awful, but I really enjoyed it.

For me, the holy trinity of so bad they're good movies are The Room, Sharknado and For Your Height Only. I've seen all 3 multiple times and they only get better with repeat viewings.

Other classics for me would be Leprechaun 4: In Space, Gingerdead Man, Hard Ticket to Hawaii and Miami Connection. Probably forgetting a dozen classics but they are the ones that spring to mind as perfect SBIG movies.

Hot Tub Time Machine.

Zoolander and Death becomes her are entertaining movies, but I don't think it's because they're so bad they're good, it's because that's just how the movies are written and directed. I enjoyed the stupidity of Hot Tub Time Machine too.

Redtails. About the black airmen ww2. Flew escorts fighter plane. Entire black cast apart from a few white commanding officers and bomber plane crews. So bad it's brilliant.

Tremors with Kevin Bacon deserves a mention in this thread.

To keep it within the subset of films that were made in earnest, and not in some post-modern winking to the audience (so basically, ignoring Sharknado and its ilk)...

The David Lynch version of Dune is ostensibly terrible; it's intangible, baggy and not a particularly great adaptation ... but I love it all the same. It's a glorious fever dream aesthetically, a universe so singular and unique it's hard not to forgive it just for being so surreal.

I also maintain a small (small!) candle lit for John Woo's early US films; Broken Arrow and Face/Off are madcap and stupid, in all the right ways. Mission Impossible 2 was just stupid, but those other two films got the mixture jusssst right.

Then there's a big bucket of films who are too numerous to mention, but they're either those shameless Star Wars knock offs from the 70/80s (Krull! Battle Beyond the Stars!), or else a Creature Feature. I grew up watching every monster movie I could and it was a happy, rainy Sunday if 20 Millions Miles to Earth was on the TV

I absolutely love that film and I'm a massive Frank Herbert fan. When you view it as being a work by David Lynch and don't expect it to make much sense narratively then it all comes together.

Have you watched the fan recut Dune Redux by Spicediver? It's definitely worth a watch.

I've a special place in my heart for 80s and 90s action films as it's all I ever watched as a kid.

Things like Hard Target, True Lies, Demolition Man - we thought we were great watching 18s films but on reflection, they might be gory but they have everything imaginable to appeal to an adolescent.

I always wonder who some of those movies were actually made for. Last Action Hero is a great example, it has all the makings of an 'adult' action movie but then is blended with a kids moving to create something odd.

ConAir is a great film though - it's cheesy and deliberately over the top, but that's not the same as bad. They knew exactly what they were doing (see also The Rock and Face/Off)

My SBIG nominations:

Ed Wood's cross-dressing "documentary" Glen or Glenda; his more famous "worst movie of all time" Plan 9 from Outer Space is boring after about 10 minutes though

and more recently Congo starring Tim Curry and the least realistic gorilla in film history.

Darkman was made by Sam Raimi of Evil Dead fame, it's deliberately hokey.

Yeah, Tremors doesn't belong on this thread, it's a legitimately great B-Movie: Tight pacing; efficient story; likeable, memorable characters; effective monsters; and some fantastic FX that still hold up. Can't speak to the bajillion direct-to-video sequels, but that original movie was a good example of taking an old genre (the 1950s monster movie), and applying to to a modern setting - WITHOUT going all meta and ironic.

edit: Starship Troopers just posted, that movie is exactly as intended, over the top satire.

I have never even heard of that, so must go searching. Thanks! Yeah, it's definitely more David Lynch than anything else and is a good example of taking a ... non-traditionalist eye to a well worn setting like the Space Opera.

Demolition Man feels like a film that has latterly got a lot of retroactive praise for its satirical element. You'll come across a lot of blogs, essays and the like highlighting its smarts beneath the cheesy 90s action.

Last Action Hero was a famous trainwreck, it was butchered, rewritten, chopped & changed during production and is a storied tale of Hollywood excess run amok. Worth reading into.
