South African Elections

Counting underway in South African elections. ANC expected to take a bit of a kicking at the expense of the Democratic Alliance (their leader is a slick operator - Mmusi Maimane) and Julius Malema's EFF (Populist hard-left, calling for land expropriation and nationalization of key private industries). ANC still will remain the largest party barring a major upset.

SA is a sad case. 50% youth unemployment, regular power outages, and a huge housing shortage. ANC seem to be turbo-Fianna Fail these days. Anecdotally, I've come across quite a few South Africans (mostly white) in Ireland over the past couple of years who have bailed on the country.

SA is a great show case for power corrupts and to be honest ANC has wasted Mandela's legacy. 25 years in power and their main achievement is to create a very small black elite connected to ANC while leaving the wast population in the same or worse conditions basically.

Politicians seem determined to follow the route Zimbabwe took after independence and squander the wealth in the country.

This election will probably be seen in time as South Africa's last chance.

That the EFF got near 10% is another worry.

The decline of South Africa is only going to accelerate.

    Failed State within 20 years.

It's a good result for the ANC considering the last few years, and will hopefully give Ramaphosa some cover in cleaning up institutions and pushing Zuma loyalists into obscurity.

The EFF did better than previously but not dramatically so,given all the media coverage they get.Poor result for the DA.

Its shocking to say that conditions for black people in SA were actually better under apartheid, the corruption and abuse in their political system is only tolerated because of the continent its on and history, anywhere else and somebody would be shelling the crap out of them to free the people

    Mandela's legacy of violence?

Pretty awful situation. The country is being run into the ground with corruption yet the people are still voting ANC. Not much can be done by when people are democratically bringing this upon themselves.

A party associated with the liberation of the people being voted in again and again is not, unfortunately, a uniquely South African phenomena. In time splits will emerge and new parties will enter the field.

Mandela was a terrorist. He was activity involved in bombing civilians including women and children. His wife's bodyguards 'Mandela United Football Club.'' were implicated in punishment beatings. Melting tyres around people's necks. ANC were always bad.

It was a war against one of the more vile regimes in the 20th century. The aftermath of apartheid saw a truth commission, rather than war crimes trials for the members of the apartheid state.

Given that our own country is still dominated by indpendence era parties, then it would seem likely the ANC will be part of South Africa's political landscape for another generation at least.

Bombing innocent civilians does not a war against a regime make. It's called terrorism.

Two points:whatever the sins of the ANC (and there were some),they pale in extent to the terrorism of the apartheid state. And attempting to tie Mandela to attacks on civilians simply doesn't stand up,since he was completely out of the picture from 1964 until 1990.

He was leader of their armed wing. That's like saying IRA leaders played no part in bombing campaigns in London. Or Osama had nothing to do with WTC

well as we all know, there are still plenty apologists for Gerry Adams.

The reality of it is that the ANC are still only being re-elected based on Mandela freeing south africa from apartheid, That said it was his one good trick.

It was the ANC's country to ruin, and boy did they ruin it. You have to really look hard at yourself when you're the party that was supposed to free black people from persecution and instead you made the lives of black people worse than one of the most racist regimes in the world ever did.

Asymmetric warfare, actually. "terrorism" is a term rendered meaningless by decades of misuse.

You've something to back that claim, I trust?

Asymmetric warfare... Nice term for deliberately targeting women and children. Two wrongs don't make a right. They probably died in vain too, seeing as the ANC were arguably worse than the regime they supplanted.

Could you produce some evidence to back that up please?
