That pic was used because it was so colourful, and that is what they wanted to test in the early days. But there was something very creepy about that doll also, it frightened quite a few children at the time.

...and that's why it was used so extensively in "Life on Mars". :)

    Anyone remember Street Halk

street hawk, yes, possibly another sky one job. I think you can get old RTE guide pages online showing the daily lineups. There were a few programs with vehicles after knight rider, -Airwolf, blue thunder, streethawk

I have downloaded a few pilot and final episodes of old programs. Many people would have missed the pilots and only got around to watching them when the show got more popular, before the days of boxsets etc. The pilot of knight rider was pretty good.

One I had looked up was the dungeons and dragons cartoon, I was not a big fan but always wondered what happened. Turns out the finale episode was never produced!

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dungeons_%26_Dragons_episodes
    28 "Requiem" Unproduced

The children finally have a chance to return home – but is it worth the risk?

Note: This episode was written by the series original screenwriter Michael Reaves but has not been produced for television. Reaves has discussed the episode,[1] and published the original script on his personal website.[2] The episode is also included on the first Region 1 DVD release, in the form of a radio play.)

Loved this 2 part mini-series when it came out:

    The State

An old MTV comedy sketch show that was on between 1993-95, I think.

Loved it. Some sketches were a little too insane and you'd get lost watching it but 80% of it was brilliant.

Voyagers!, a US children's show aired briefly on RTE in the early to mid 80s. Involved time travel to teach about history. I loved it as a kid.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyagers!

Starred an actor called Jon-Erik Hexum who not much later died tragically in on-set accident while messing with a prop gun.

He was also the star of one of my favourite shows, Cover-Up, where he died, as you have mentioned. I though the intro was the best ever.

I also used to love "this morning with Richard not Judy", but i was much older:pac:

I know, although the kids trapped in a web with a giant spider approaching, and the undead coming up through the floors was a bit much in comparison to Fireman Sam:pac:

That tune is brilliant, never heard it before. I read about the "test card girl" with the doll a while back.

OK, you have really opened a can of worms there.... the history of test card design and it's use, is a very particular geek interest that has sadly been lost in the mists of time. Few people remember them and even fewer realise that they were first used to calibrate the brightness and contrast settings on a black and white TV.

The colour bars were later added and used to select the correct shade for each colour. The bars were placed close together so that you could adjust your TV to ensure that no colour 'bled into' it's adjoining colour.

The various shapes and horizontal & vertical lines were used to ensure that contrast and brightness settings were correctly adjusted so that the lines remained clear and straight and did not cause any sound interference - strong brightness and contrast settings could result in wavy lines and an audible hum on the received signal. This would be caused by the video signal being set too strong and it then expanding into the separate audio channel frequency.

There are websites dedicated to preserving images of various test cards from around the world and detailing the evolving technical developments in TV broadcasting that resulted in the need to change the designs.

For more on the story of the girl with the clown design (the legendary Test Card 'F'), take a look here.

I'll get my coat and leave now ;)

I just remembered another sci-fi from the mid 1990s. Space Above and Beyond. It lasted 1 season and ended on a cliff hanger.

Incoming message from the big giant head! I loved John Lithgow in this.

Watched it in the 80s when first released. Most memorable moment? Woman gives birth to baby. All looks normal for a moment. Palpable relief all round as she was impregnated by an alien. Then baby opens mouth and serpent tongue gives a nice flick-absolutely brilliant TV. All talking about that scene the following day in school. :D

I remember that! The rat swallowing scene was another memorable moment.
