Not one album stood out for me this year. Strange one. Lots of albums I liked but nothing I loved. Anyway, in no particular order.....

From When I Wake - Kathryn Joseph
There's A Riot Going On - Yo La Tengo
    Singularity - Jon Hopkins
Double Negative - Low (though I don't buy into the love that it got this year. I wouldn't see it as a patch on their Secret Name era)
    Arrhythmia - Stuart Staples
    At Weddings - Tomberlin
Cocoa Sugar - Young Fathers (this was excellent)
    Re:member - Olafur Arnalds
    And Nothing Hurt - Spiritualized
There's Always Glimmer - Gia Margaret
Chris - Christine & the Queens
    Daytona - Pusha T
    7 - Beach House

Lots of the usual indie suspects in there and yet two of the best songs I heard this year were Sucker Punch by Sigrid and Slow Burn by Kacey Musgraves.
Depressingly, I don't think that I listened to - or was aware of - any great Irish releases this past year. Has been that way for quite a while for me, I'm afraid.

I have two Irish albums that I liked but would agree has being a quiet year,in general really. I dont really listen to alot of Irish music unless I see them live and they impress as in Just Mustard case or a band I already Know like Therapy.

    Typhoon-Offerings
    The Growlers-Causal Acquaintance
    Teleman-Family of Ailen
    Just Mustard – Wednesday
    Therapy? Cleave
    Lebanon Hanover-Let them be Alien
Idles -Joy as an act of resistance

2018 has been a year which has made me wonder whether music has nose-dived, or whether I've become an anachronism (most likely). In the words of Grandpa Simpson "I used to be with it, then it changed".

My favourite albums this year were:

David Kitt - 'Yous'. I hadn't listened to A David Kitt album since The Big Romance (unless you count the excellent dance album he put out under his New Jackson moniker). I was stunned by how beautiful this is.

    Hookworms - 'Microshift'

Anjelique Kidjo - 'Remain in Light'. I'm a sucker for covers albums.

Big Red Machine - 'Big Red Machine'

David Byrne - 'American Utopia'. It's not his best work, but his incredible 3 Arena gig brought a new dimension to it.

My biggest 'discovery' this year was Baxter Dury. His 2017 album 'Prince of Tears' is outstanding, and his back catalogue is well worth checking out.

I think I'll really enjoy Low's 'Double Negative' album. My cheapo headphones don't remotely do it justice, so I'll have to listen to it at home on my speaker. I've really liked moments of Idle, but I find them a bit repetitive. I'll have to work a bit harder!

Low's Double Negative all the way. An album that demands and rewards in equal measure. And as Richard said, listen to it in a quality setting and you really get to see what it's really all about. Honourable mentions to Spiritualized, Mitski, Beach House, eels and Phosphorescent.

Pretty decent year looking back at it, but definitely not as strong as previous years for me.

According to last.fm the top 5 most listened albums from the last 12 months for me were

Jon Hopkins - Singularity - pretty clear AOTY for me.
Father John Misty — God's Favorite Customer - enjoyed this quite a bit.
A Perfect Circle — Eat the Elephant - better than I was expecting, some decent tracks on it.
Tove Lo — BLUE LIPS (Lady Wood Phase II) - came out late last year
Deafheaven — Ordinary Corrupt Human Love - Really liked this one, I thought it was better than the previous album.

Burns is an excellent track. It was`Nobody But You´ that got my attention. I think I heard it first on BBC radio 6 at the beginning of the summer.

This remix of Burns is the freakin business

Really enjoyed albums from Low, Daughters, Mount Eerie, Lingua Ignota, The Body, Jon Hopkins, Puce Mary, Emma Ruth Rundle, Shame, Kids See Ghosts.

Still digesting albums from Noname, Yves Tumor, Pusha T, but reckon they're honourable mentions as of now.

Hmmm. I don't think I could offer a definitive top 10 or anything, but here are some albums I enjoyed this year:

    Let's Eat Grandma - I'm All Ears.

It was a bit uneven in places, but when it was good it was amazing. Big step up in terms of maturity from their debut. I must have listened to "Falling Into Me" about 100 times. I feel they have the potential to make an absolute classic somewhere down the line.

    Jonelle Monae - Dirty Computer

I enjoyed the wild ride. A few classy tunes on it like this:

    Young Fathers - Cocoa Sugar

I like how unclassifiable they still manage to be. A group with consistent quality control.

US Girls - In a poem unlimited

I listened to this album a lot when it came out. I can't hear any of the songs without thinking back to Febuary or March of this year. Then I didn't listen to it for ages and told myself that I'd gotten sick of it or something. Obviously, I was crazy, because I'm listening to it now as I type this and, yup, it's still a fantastic record. A very palatable mix of experimentation and classic songwriting. If someone was to call it their album of the year, I wouldn't quibble with them one bit -

    Hookworms - Microshift

A lot of weird sht seems to have happened lately in relation to these guys, but I'd lying if I said I didn't really like this record. It came as a surprise because I'd found them to be a kind of boring band up until that point, then suddenly -boom- they transformed into this senistive epic outfit. Whatever may have actually gone down, I still think this song is an absolute banger -

    Ezra Furman - Transangelic Exodus

This album seems to have gone under the radar a bit, which is a real shame. He's kind of amazing this guy, mixing theatrics and brutal honesty - and fck me he can really write a song. There isn't really a bad song on this album and none of them are that alike either and he's got an ear for filling his songs with cool choices.

Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want.

A top quality album made by a band at the top of their game, probably the best album of their career so far. Might be a bit too dark for some, but if you give it a chance you'll come to appreciate it. In my heart this is probably my number one for the year -

    Sophie - A Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides

A truly wild and unclassifiable ride. Ultra noisy and abrasive sounds mixed with ultra-bubblegum pop. A synthetic sounding nightmare. If you liked the wackier moments from Let's Eat Grandma this year, listen to this because she was partly responsible -

    Jon Hopkins - Singularity.

While it's not as good as Immunity and some of the more ethereal stuff on it fails to grab me, there's no denying the engrossing epicness of some of the songs on here -

    Low - Double Negative.

I really liked this album a lot. Is it the best album of the year like a lot of people are saying? Ehh, I don't know. It's a very solid record that contains great stuff, but I don't think it's the absolute pinnacle of the year or Low's career, but it is excellent in its own right -

Other Stuff that I thought was good -

    Parquet Courts - Wide Awake
Idles - Joy as an Act of Resistance - Though I do think it was a little bit overhyped.
Julia Holter - Aviary - Still haven't fully digested it yet.
Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy - People seem to have forgotten about this one.
Denzel Curry - TAI300 - I liked the harsher closing third more than the previous two thirds.
    Nine Inch Nails- Bad Witch
    Nils Frahm - All Melody
Kids See Ghosts - Kids See Ghosts - Some serious tunes on this.
Anna von Hausswolff - Dead Magic - Sometimes it comes off as Swans-lite, but fck it that's okay.

Stuff That I liked at first but got tired of eventually -

Mitski - Be The Cowboy - Some great half songs on this, but everything is so short and suffers for it.

Deafheaven - Ordinary Corrupt Human Love - I was all over this record to begin with, but after repeated listens I can't escape the conclusion that I think they've taken a step backward, the post-rocky elements eventually reveal themselves to be fairly meat and potatoes stuff after a time IMO. Not a patch on their debut.

And that's about it I guess, until I think of something else in five minutes.

Miley Cyrus lite... not saying I don't like the voice. Also reminds me of Jewel and when I was 15

Love that King Push album though.

Beach House's 7 is the album I've been listening to most this year. Took a few listens but I think it may be their best to date. "Lemon Glow" and "Black Car", in particular, are gorgeous, hypnotising, glorious songs.

Honourable mentions for Villagers The Art of Pretending to Swim, Florence + the Machine's High as Hope and Troye Sivan Bloom, which I know isn't really alt/indie but is a cracking pop album!

Jon Hopkins - Singularity (To note, I think this is one of the best electronic albums of the decade)
    Kojaque - Deli Daydreams
    Shame - Songs of Praise
    Kali Uchis - Isolation

Honourable mention for the EPs of both Gus Dapperton, and Jimothy Lacoste.

Let's Eat Grandma's I'm All Ears was the standout album for me for most the year but it's been pipped to the post by the boygenius EP.
