Gonna have good draft selections this year (again) and between dead cap, existing cap space, obvious leavers like McCown there's around $55m to invest in free agency without pulling many rabbits out of the hat.

Ideally it's a new coach, a new GM, hand them over a potential QB of the future, some good young skill position players and a load of cap room and high draft picks. If at some point this franchise can start making better decisions it can all change.

Agreed for once (except GM actually). Even if we have to overpay a bit there should be chances to plug holes in FA. There's plenty who I would have no problem with not seeing again, just a question of making sure we can keep any semi-competent bodies.

who do we want for HC next year? An offense guy to grow Darnold? A defense guy to repair this wretched unit, with a good OC to keep Darnold going?

Defense this year is working on being an all-time worst in franchise history. 5 straight games without a TO (longest since 2008!) And Bowles supposedly a defense guy, at least, some cut him slack as far as developing an offense goes because he's a defense guy. Lousy defense.

I think the whole coaching staff goes in the offseason. Trouble is, how many years do we give them to become competitive again? Another 3 year rebuild to mediocrity and an occasional wild-card game? Bleh.

I actually don't think the defense is that bad, tough to look good when you're seeing so much ball against you. Edge rush and corners could be better but they're grand overall imo.

Offensive minded HC is definitely my preference, probably on OC from this year. Sam needs all the help he can get and we need some inspiration to get the most from the mediocre players elsewhere on offense. Bare minimum I want is someone who can run the game from the sideline, no more stupid calls / timeouts.

I've no words to describe how sh1t Jeremy Bates offensive gameplan is!! Jason Myers has been a great find though, putting through field goals from all over the place

That sucked, really sucked. Plenty of positives completely undone in the final quarter.

Titans D held on long enough for the offense to actually move the ball.

at 10-0 down, expected you guys to win handily tbh

Or first drives... or anything else :/

Impressive to find a way to lose that, Titans looked like a mirror image of us from the past few weeks and we started out alright. An impressive combo of poor playcalling, ridiculous penalties and soft defense gave that away really easily.

First quarter, actually had a few interesting offensive plays called. Then for most of the rest of the game we went back to run-run-run/failed screen. The only reason the run game worked early is because we kept them honest mixing in some quick passes, and because we showed some different looks with an extra back, guys in motion and some actual creative blocking, which all ended very abruptly.

your penalties on the Corey davis TD drive were insane.

Boger and his guys are fond of the flag thats for sure

I swear a 6 year old with a box of crayons and some paper could come up with a better offensive gameplan than Jeremy Bates, its been absolutely atrocious

Why, because every 2d down play was a run/off-tackle run? At least Darnold came back and had a couple completions.

    It won't be a shutout.

Oh, and great job Toad on reducing the penalties. Still in the 1st half and I think 5 with 1 declined.

At least the special teams are playing well

Impressive 4th quarter by all 3 teams, credit to Bowles for going for it on 4th down. thought sure he would have taken the 3 points

Not strictly JETS related. Mark Sanchez played QB for the Redskins on Sunday and was an unmitigated disaster, apparently. Redskins seem to be another team cursed with having won a Superbowl once(?) and laughably bad since, teasing a few times but imploding usually in prime-time. I still remember LT destroying Joe Theismann's leg.

Anyway, nice read, the writer has an axe to grind (why not sign Kaepernick), but wow, Sanchez shouldn't be on a squad.

Off to MetLife on Saturday, not expecting a win but if we can play well and keep it competitive I'll be more than happy. Hopefully Sam is fully fit and gets another TD pass or two under his belt.

Of QBs that have attempted 200+ passes on the season, Darnold is now ranked 30th of 32 (he also ranked 29th / 30th as a runner at the position).

    https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/qb

To add some relevant context to this:

    - Sam Allen (1st as a rusher at the position) and Josh Rosen are 31st and 32nd as passers
    - Baker Mayfield is 17th
    - Lamar Jackson is performing better as a passer the last four games than Darnold has been across the whole season

To be crystal clear, I'm not pointing out these stats to say he's a bust or is doomed or whatever. However, his first season is going extremely poorly. That is obviously in the context of a struggling roster as a whole and him being a rookie. But *substantial* improvement is required over the offseason if the team is to have a chance of winning anything with him under center.

Interestingly, Mariota / Prescott / Trubisky are the only three QBs in the bottom half of these rankings likely to lead a team to the playoffs, and they have two key points going for them:

    1) They play on teams with either excellent defenses / rushing attacks / both
    2) They contribute positively with their legs to keep the offense moving forward

I think the selection for new head coach has to prioritise this situation. It is absolutely necessary for Bowle's successor to be a coach who has a track record working with and developing young QBs. The short to medium term future of the franchise depends upon it.

Would have to agree with this. Bill Barnwell story on ESPN points out the lack of help for Darnold. Some development evident last Sunday and hopefully more to come. Good coaching, improved running game and improved O line are vital for development of any QB.

Well now, plenty to be positive about through the first 60% of this one

Good effort overall, maybe Hopkins should have been handled differently but he took his two scores incredibly well. Anderson was good all game but that last ball needed to be caught to extend on 4th down when trailing 26 - 22.

Good performance and but for being unable to cover Hopkins the Jets probably would win. Sam played well and avoided too many bad decisions. He did well on the move and the amount of times he was out of the pocket shows how overmatched the OL is. There is a lot of ifs surrounding the future of this team but you would have to think that with a bit more talent around Darnold the Jets could be competitive on a consistent basis.

Imagine what Darnold could do with some half decent football coaches

The Jet Press on Twitter asked what us fans would like for Christmas. By the time I finalised the list of needs, I looked like a greedy b@$yard!

17 penalties for 172 yards for the Jets today, most of them on the defence! Hard to win a game with numbers like that

You would have to admit there were some terrible calls. And then Bowles missed an opportunity in his press conference to go off on an epic rant about it!!! It would have been a perfect cap on the Jets season to see him finally show some passion all be it too late.
It some ways it was the perfect result with Darnold excelling but not hurting the draft position. Also good performances from Herndon and Anderson have to be encouraging.
Interesting the Jets are already being linked to Jim Harbaugh with reports saying he wants full control over player personnel and the draft.

There was one or two that were bad, I felt the Adams one and the two point conversion were harsh but other than that I dont think they can have many complaints and both those penalties only added a couple of yards to the the total.

I agree with it being a good result. Young guys showed promise, Darnold and Anderson continue to connect and if Darnold can go in to next season playing like he's finished this one I think the Jets will be doing ok. Looks like a top 4 pick is guaranteed now, hopefully they can do a number on the Patriots next weekend.

Another failed season limps to a close with a rout in Foxboro. Didn't even bother to look into the game, apparently Trumaine Johnson didn't play.

Todd Bowles fired Sunday night. Goodbye, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Much discussion on who'll succeed him. One article I read was, "The last "offensive-minded" head coach the jets had, was Richie Kotite." Now isn't *that* frightening.

Bowles gone but Mac stays. I think it's probably a missed chance to clean house completely as I would be worried how Mac would spend all that free agent money. There is a significant number of holes on the roster and very little depth. With up to 22 current players out of contract the money will have to be spread thinner than expected. You would really have to worry about talent evaluation when you see the performance of Deontay Burnett yesterday. Sam was crying out for weapons all year and yet Burnett was inactive until yesterday and then has 5 catches for over 50 yds. It seems like the coaching staff had started to dial it in from halfway through the season. Anyway on to the offseason where we will have coaching speculation and then the draft to look forward to. Also saw speculation on twitter that the Jets may be Jacksonvilles opponents in London next year.
