Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Only 600 out of 66,700 new jobs created in the South East Region last year!

    This really is damning on the IDA and our South East politicians:

    Breakdown on the number of new jobs created in the regions last year

    Dublin: + 32,900 jobs
    South-west: + 15,100
    Midlands: +7,900
    Mid-east: +7,300
    West: +5,100
    South-east: + 600
    Mid-west: No change
    Border: Minus 3,100

    For comparison in the census in 2016 the Midlands Region population was: 292,301
    The South East population from the same census was: 422,062

    So the South East Region has 30% more population than the Midlands but there were 7,300 jobs less created in the South East!!!

    Even in the West region where this is again a smaller population than the South east of 380,057 there were 4,500 more new jobs created there!

    What are the politicians of this region doing?

    This is a disgrace for every single person living in this region as we not only don't have access to things like 24/7 cardiac care or a University we can't even get a few jobs now out of nearly 67,000 created.

    Ye're are still very welcome folks!
    I've said it before and I'll say it again.
    There is sweet **** all going to happen in the sunny south east
    for a hell of a long time so sell/rent out your homes and start
    dreaming of pastures greener because it's here where it's happening!

    Shocking alright but no surprise re South-East. What's more surprising is Mid-West (i.e. Limerick City) flat-lining and the Midlands doing so well. Is that just more greater-Dublin spillover?

    It is just that. All the county towns within easy access of Dublin have become commuter belt areas due unsurprisingly to the lower cost of housing.

    Ya have said it before and noone asked you to say it again .You really are bitter about Waterford. Why don't you just comment on the Dublin threads if that's where your living. Just cos you couldn't make anything happen for you here. Your constantly hoping nothing happens down here because your a bitter bitter man. If and when the place picks up please don't come back here stay where you are and spread your bitterness there.

    It's also notable that about 90% of those jobs were created in the services industry, which would help to explain why so many jobs were centred in Dublin and the commuter belt.

    Stay away from us, assuming you are actually in Dublin at all. I suspect you live in a dark damp apartment in Mary Street - never seeing the sun as it faces out onto a narrow street and a taller building facing north.

    I have to take issue and disagree here- the south east is a fantastic location with some major plus points- it’s just that’s it’s not on the government radar as the political representatives are so abysmal. Contrast with cork and limerick regions that have had an endless parade of senior ministries. They make a huge difference as regards directing policy and investment.
    I’m pretty shocked at the figures too as I thought generally things were on the up.

    That can’t be really it either as much of the south east namely north Kilkenny, Wexford and Carlow should be getting that same overspill too with jobs but clearly not the case.
    Pretty shocking that the midlands could be outperforming the south east by so much as I often am in portlaoise and Tullamore and you wouldn’t think that is the case on the street

    Four seat constituency is our biggest political problem. FG are always confident of winning two so put no effort in to win or keep votes, FF have NEVER cared for us (Cullen the only FF senior minister was elected first a PD and built his base from there let's not forget.) The odd socialist has added nothing in terms of cabinet influence. If there was a fifth seat everyone would have to pay attention to our desires and deliver a few goodies.

    Well I don’t live in Waterford but the other two SE constituencies are 5 seaters and consistently elect the same non entities also- I don’t think people in the south east are overtly political and that’s a problem as there seems to be no appetite to get stuck in and be in the prominent positions- contrast with the west of Ireland where tds appear hungry to be in power and grab all they can for their constituents. Need only look at Kerry for evidence of this. It’s not ideal politics but gets the job done as the employment figures illustrate

    If you've ever travelled down the coast road from Dublin at about 17:00 you'll see that Wexford is also a commuter county
    in areas such as Gorey, Enniscorthy, Bunclody to name but a few and even Wexford Town. Carlow is very much the same.
    The last time I got a bus to Waterford the bus emptied at Carlow.


    People here should be doing the same with Cork as it's only down the road and plenty of opportunities in Cork!

    Transport infrastructure in Ireland is about 20-30 years behind making this a realistic option. Jesus even the commute from Carlow/Wexford to Dublin is fúckin insane to be doing on a daily basis. Life's too short for that crap.

    Completely agree that our transport system is a shambles.
    We need more rail lines and new depots.
    I'd love to see a train running from Waterford servicing Youghal, Cork
    and on to Tralee & Killarney.

    The problem with Waterford is its geographically in no mans land,we are the only county from Munster in the south east region.wexford Kilkenny and Carlow being Leinster aligned themselves to dublin many years ago,cork and limerick are the main drivers of Munster,we have suffered negligence from governments and businesses for many years now,will it improve anytime soon? Probably not.ok we have this north quays been developed,great to see it hopefully happen,is it a game changer for Waterford?will help,but we need investment in employment in this region,cork and limerick are getting billions pumped into it over the next twenty years,take the north quays out of the ireland 2040 plan and let’s be honest we only got crumbs from the government again

    Last Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform (the spending Dept.) was Wexford, current Minister for State in Finance is Wexford, current Minister for State in the Dept. Taoiseach is Wexford, current Minister for State in Housing is Kilkenny, last Minister for Environment was Kilkenny.
