There's a fair bit of hyping up of this - so I would guess they are confident its got strength. Freemantle have bought worldwide media rights which is a good sign.

The Irish Refugee Council "voices concern" about it.

The Irish Refugee Council "voices concern" about it.

Sort of like the fools on Facebook saying that its rubbish when they haven't seen it.

But in fairness, the Refugee council did not say what the headline says - (nothing unusual about that in the world of tabloids) it said it "hopes" it offers an accurate reflection of direct provision and that it was good to see it featured in something other than news reports.

And as per usual with anything made here, there will be the usual knockers saying that its rubbish or that a scene was in Balbriggan one minute and Bray the next just because they recognise some landmarks. Already I saw some sous chef on FB from a well known restaurant saying that the acting was sh1te - I wonder what his reaction would be if someone claimed the food in the restaurant he worked in was sh1te without visiting it?

will give it a watch on Sunday night , im sure it will be a love/hate type of show :D

Will be watching this on +1 later! Reading some of the descriptions and given the current state of entertainment media I'm apprehensive that it'll veer too far into "men in general are scumbags #girlppwer" territory like Acceptable Risk did in its later episodes last year (very strong start before slowly and boringly descending every male character into one negative stereotype or another) - the kind of agenda pushing television which for me irreversibly breaks the fourth wall in its lack of subtlety. But I'd love to end up being wrong, so will be eagerly watching later.

I could be projecting somewhat here as from all accounts, this is exactly what the once great House of Cards has done in its final season and I'm fairly bummed about that. The "heroes are all female, villains are all male" configuration which has been cropping up in a lot of screen fiction over the last few years is, apart from being unnecessarily political and preachy, making plot lines far too predictable and easy to guess before finishing the show or movie. But let's have a look and see...

Anyone heading for an instant review - cast your mind back to Love/Hate, the first series wasn't the best. It took a while for it to bed in...

If this was good on its own merits they wouldn't need to mention Love Hate in every tweet/advertisement.

It has only been on for 15 minutes.

    Very different to Love/Hate.

    That's not how marketing works.

You deduct that from less than 15 minutes?

    WOW.

You must have a phenomenal skill or just one of these thankfully reducing number of naysayers just because something is irish

Pretty much every comedy/drama RTE has made has been absolutely atrocious, so something being Irish is a good indicator of how poor it's going to be

    How many Gleesons are there?

Yup painfully sjw, wouldnt have looked out of place in any ad of the last few decades for a domestic cleaning product either.

Don't agree with the cynicism here. So far I'm pretty engaged and the production value is better than usual for Irish TV.

This is trying to be an Irish version of Nordic noir.

8 years in a Direct Provision Centre though???
Is this really a thing?? Madness.
It would be surely much better for the EU to tackle the issue of these dysfunctional countries rather then having to bear the cost of hosting their refugees.

sorry to say - but because of the accents - very hard to understand some of the dialogue

Jesus..is it me or is the acting atrocious?..apart from the refugee lady..

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,014 ✭✭✭tylercheribini

The whole "thicko-bogger-male-garda" caricature was already flogged to death in Love/Hate and The Savage Eye etc, at this stage they may aswell do a keystone cops remake.

    not depicting the garda well

    probably true ?

can't understand a word some of the main characters are saying

Having lived in oz,u.s and driven through some dodgy ex soviet states, the cops here are saints in comparison.

    Very possible:

432 people had been in the system for five years of more

Acting is ropey enough from most of them.

Seems to be. At the start of this year the Irish Times had this factoid: '432 people had been in the system for five years or more.'

Like many things in the country it's a mess.
