    Caissa and us will be level on 0 match points and 2½ game points, but Sonnenborg is the interim tie-breaker. We would very much like Wood Green to win (they are 2½-1½ up with two level enough games remaining) and Blackthorne Russia to draw (but they are 3-1 down and completely lost in another board - curiously against a team we lost narrowly to last year)

    It is entirely possible we'll be for the bye tomorrow - but maybe we'll get an "easy" draw instead and pull away from the bottom with a win.

    Benildus escaped the bye and will play White Knights Chess Club from Wales.

    That should be a close match but Peter Bevan (who was on their 65+ team at the Seniors in July) beat an IM in the first round so do not take him lightly if he plays. (He might be rested as his health isn't great, I think, and he lost to a weaker player today. Anyway please give him my regards.)

    Ballinasloe meet Bronshoj Skakforening (from Denmark)
    and Dublin play Jetsmark (also Danish) who had the bye today.

    Both those teams have an IM and one or two FMs and all their players are over 2000. Nevertheless there are chances for a result if all goes well.

    Looks like Ballinasloe could pull this level. The opposition captain must be livid with his player who had many chances to draw and thereby win the match

    They did indeed draw their match! A fantastic result for the Connaught men - outrated by over 300 points per board.

    The other Irish teams went down so Benildus likely have the bye - unlucky really as Burkey could have won his game. Another good result for Dylan Boland who claimed their only win today.

    Colm Egan looks like he'll add respectability to the Dublin score with an impressive win of his own.

    Had my eye on that one alright. The first sacrifice may have been foolish but you can't deny the queen sacrifice was brilliant enough to deserve the result.
    If the clocks are to be believed Kenneth was down to about a minute after 20 or so moves. The game ended up lasting 62 :cool:

    Congratulations to Colm and Dylan for their wins, and to Ballinasloe who will now play Caissa Chania CC, a potentially winnable match (one of the few).
    Commiserations to Benildus who indeed have the bye tomorrow.

    Dublin play Lazio Scacchi, probably an amateur team from Rome?

    This a great event and an experience to play in
    It does have a longstanding and basic flaw that particularly affects Irish teams
    The regulations should require the host federation to put a decent local team on standby, ready to play if required to keep the numbers even and eliminate the byes

    He played in the European Team Championship preliminaries leading to Kapfenberg 1970, for Ireland, rather than the European Club Cup. Still impressive!

    That Botvinnik line is indeed mad, very hard to play over the board (especially with Black) because it's very testing on both memory and calculation - but popular in correspondence games. Qg7 appears to have been a novelty and maybe ...d4 would have been the best reply.

    My heart bleeds for you. Reminds me of my disasters last year in live games against GMs J. van Foreest and Tarjan.
