The 2019 Pro Football Hall Of Fame modern era nominees were released today. There are 102 in total including first time eligible nominees, Tony Gonzalez, Ed Reed, Champ Bailey, and London Fletcher. The names with an * next to their names were finalists(last 15) last year.
There are also three others including one senior finalist in Johnny Robinson who played his entire career for the Kansas City chiefs and retired in 1971, and Broncos owner Pat Bowlen and long time Dallas Cowboys executive Gil Brandt.

The job of the hall of fame voters is to get these names down to 18(15 modern plus three others) who will then be voted on on the day before the super bowl and pick five modern era players and potentially all three of the non modern era nominees for a maximum class of eight inductees next August in canton.

Just saw Olin kreutz is back on the list of Hof nominees. That's pretty cool, he seemed to have dropped out of consideration altogether. Don't he'll get in but still he was great

    This is bonkers

Incredible he is. He did a similar interview on HBO on Real Sports a long the same lines back in July

If Pat Bowlan isn't voted in this year then the HOF is an absolute joke.

I'd agree he should be in but there are a lot of players and coaches and contributors who should be in who aren't.

And there are a fair few on the above list who didn't do a whole lot to warrant being on it.

Again, JRG i agree. The one area outside of the actual on field stuff that I really dive into is the pro football hall of fame. Well the list above are players who have been retired more than five but less than twenty five years which I believe is the point a player turns from modern era to senior. The list above is no reflection of a players career. It's a reflection more of the length of time they are retired from the game.

I don't think Bob Kraft has even been nominated yet for it.

I don't like active owners being put in - yes them no longer being owners is likely because they've passed away, but the rules should be consistent. An ex player or coach who becomes an owner getting inducted for their coaching or playing five years after I am fine with, but if their only role has been as an owner then they should be retired/passed/whatever for five years before being able to be nominated. That they don't have to be just seems a bit like self-serving ego stroking to be honest.

Jerry Jones got in last year so it's a bit late changing the rules now.

I can only think of seven owners who are in the hall. Al Davis, Ralph Wilson of the bills, Lamar hunt, Eddie debartelo jr, Jerry jones, George Halas, Wellington Mara. I'm sure there might be more but I can't think of how many owners there are.

He got in as a contributor which looks like a kind of catch all group.

Kraft's legacy has still to play out - Bowlen suffers from Alzheimer's and his time in the NFL is done.

There are differences between the two - e.g. Kraft is head of a large corporate group while Bowlen interest for more than 30 years was almost exclusively the Denver Broncos.

Since he took ownership of the team in 1984 the Broncos have had the highest winning percentage of any NFL team.

Bowlen has been one of the driving forces behind many of the developments (for good and bad) in the NFL in the past 30 years. He has rubbed other owners up the wrong way at times - and has been repeatedly snubbed by the HOF over the past 4 years since he relinquished control of the team due to dementia. It is a pity that his role was not acknowledged before he was incapable of understanding that it was happening.

Personally I think this HoF stuff is a load of bollix - but in the context Bowlen should have been inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015.

Perish the thought - it's not like as if the owners all voted to hand the Lombardi trophy to the owner of the team rather than a player or coach. :D

How do you know he's been snubbed ? Many people have been snubbed for valid reasons and not so valid ones. I think to call the HOF bollix is incorrect. Is it a perfect representation of the history of American football ? No it isn't perfect but no American professional sports hall of fame is as far as I can see.

It's job is to protect and preserve the history of what we call American football. And in terms of archives if not the actual inductees it has achieved that from what I've seen. It has historic documents related to the game going back to 1920 when the NFL came into being called the APFA. So you can says it bollocks for your own reasons but I don't believe it is personally.

It is a backslapping exercise - a representation of the franchise nature of the NFL rather than a supporter driven sport.

There is a massive difference in archiving the history of the NFL (and previous or other leagues which is largely ignored) and back-slapping owners, coaches and players. Certainly acknowledge important milestones (and records if you want) - but this induction stuff is nonsense in my opinion.

Now - all of that is not really the basis of the point I was making. It would be a travesty and an absolute indictment of the HoF (and the points you make) if Pat Bowlen was not indicted this year - and it should have happened years ago before his dementia kicked in.

The Browns are releasing Josh Gordon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,173 ✭✭✭✭kmart6

Has to be more to it than a dodgy hamstring and being late this morning with how much they've stood by him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,920 ✭✭✭The Floyd p

Yeah they stand by him for 3 years, through all the **** and then after one lie about and injury and a late and the cut him? Interesting to see who wants to claim him on waivers. He's not gonna be short on offers but needs to find the right situation.

I'm going to guess New England will be in for him in a flash. Assuming he hasn't violated some league policy of course.

I see he has to clear waivers first.....doubt he'll drop all the way to the Patriots if that's the case (please god, no)

Josh Gordon the Colt is just wrong but could genuinely happen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,737 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

It's hardly surprising is it ? I mean the Browns are a mess but when he wasn't there for the start of Training Camp I felt all was not right with Josh gordon (and I'd love for him to succeed)

I don't know how many more shots he has in the NFL.

edit: Let's hope it's only his hamstring is the biggest issue Josh Gordon has.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,414 ✭✭✭Guffy

According to Shefter gordon is a vested vet so isn't subject to waivers and the browns have been getting calls with regards trades. Also hamstring was injured at a promo shoot.

Mad to imagine them letting him go. Like he scored week one so not as if he's doing nothing for them

Be great to see what he's like with a proper QB, will finally figure out if that 2013 season was a fluke or he's a proper wasted talent

I don't think Jason Campbell and Brandon Weeden are considered proper QBs. He still put up 1646 in 14 games.

    It certainly was no fluke.

    Got the talent.

I think this is the only situation where the Browns deserve the benefit of the doubt!
