Matt O'Connor to leave Leicester with immediate effect.

I'd say Geordan is delighted he didn't leave for a head coaching gig elsewhere now

Yikes! Seems a bit mad after 1st game of the season.
    Must have someone lined up.

He's been a disaster for Leicester. I don't know how he survived missing the playoffs in the league and losing 5 games in Europe. Hard to see him getting another head coach job any time soon.

Not sure how much truth there is to it, but according to twitter he didn't arrive back until two weeks into pre season and then said the forwards at the weekend weren't prepared for the season opener and the Leicester board basically decided to sack him on the spot.

I can't see him picking up a head coach gig anywhere bar maybe Ulster next season.

Not even the Ulster fans are called for McFarland to be sacked. Yet ;)

Not if you watched the Exeter game. Boys against men. MO'C should have gone last season after abysmal home defeats to Saints and Falcons.

Falcons (who were poor enough V Sarries yesterday) come to Welford Road next Saturday and Big Deano will be fancying two wins in a row. I reckon that he'll get them too!

The Tigers As lost to Saints As tonight; whole club is in free-fall.

I don’t think I’ve ever watched a full English league game!
Watced Munster beating them handy enough last season. & they looked average, with a below average bench.
I see Tuilagi also had another operation this summer.
Situation sounds grim If you are a Leicester fan.
Martin Johno Johnson to the rescue!

Crazy stuff - why wait until you're one game into the new season to sack your coach.

I get the impression that the way he went about himself since returning from the Summer break was the main contributing factor, not just the dire opening result.

That's speculation on my part based on comments online so I wouldn't take it as anything near gospel, but it would go some way to explaining the fairly bizarre circumstances.

Allegedly he turned up to preseason two weeks late, and his comments after the match admitting his forwards weren't ready yet for the season were strange.

Chris Jones in RugbyPass is reporting that PRL are selling 50% of their shares to F1's owners CVC.

Edit. BBC now reporting it too https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/45417946

Sky Sports have it too, looks legit.

A huge blow to the national team.

Is there not a risk that the RFU are eventually going to be undermined to the point where they lose relevance. Did I read recently that they are in some financial difficulty?

I don't remember seeing that but at this point they're losing all semblance of control over the clubs. With a new, outside private owner I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing clubs put under pressure to refuse to release internationals.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,761 ✭✭✭✭Winters

The RFU still hold some cards. The PRL clubs would be in even more financial trouble were it not for the large sums of money the RFU pays them for releasing the internationals.

We were discussing this on the pro14 thread. More money coming into the game and you could see the unions losing control.

All it takes is a financial issue and the union(s) could be forced to give up a stake.

There has been big worries in the uk with brexit and its effect on sponsorship.

The 6 Nations money could be in trouble if sterling tanks after brexit. I would presume the irfu get paid in sterling from the 6 nations contract.

I would imagine the IRFU get paid in Euro from the 6 nations as it is based in Dublin but the 6 Nations may get paid in sterling from some sponsors.

The 6N is headquartered in Dublin right?

  • It's a worry and whilst I'm neither a corporate finance specialist nor an economist, I can't help but think the provincial setups are operating a much more sustainable model than the premiership clubs.

I'd be worried about the English game deteriorating into a cash is king scenario to the point that their academies are able to pull youth talent from Ireland but I'm less worried because ultimately World Rugby have the final say on a lot of what happens in the game and they won't kowtow to club owners and corporate interests as easily as the RFU might.

Possible but I would definitely think the sponsors pay in sterling. The 6 Nations sponsors are generally English/British financial institutions.

    Yeah, it's om Simminscourt road.

Classy try from Elliot Daly to open scoring against Exeter. Dummies one man, steps another and runs it in from 35m.

Shaping up to be a good game. Wasps looking very good.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,162 ✭✭✭✭Buer

Cracking game at the Ricoh. 5 tries in opening 22 minutes. Wasps looked very good in attack and with their line speed early on but once Exeter started moving the ball and retaining possession, there have been a huge number of gaps in the Wasps backline defence.

Steenson kicking a dream from the tee. Three from three, all wide conversions.

14-21 after just 25 minutes. Could be try fest.

Haskell still saying “we” when referring to Wasps. Old habits.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,162 ✭✭✭✭Buer

Crunching collision for Brad Shields. I would be worried about something being broken given the contact and not just a concussion.

Another maul try for Exeter. Wasps have been destroyed there. Munster and Leinster have a lot to take note of in this match.

Truly horrendous intercept from Searle. Slade was just standing in the channel waiting. He had very little to do to take that.

Hopefully Sopoaga to come in now.

Leicester are 32-7 up against Newcastle after 23mins. They’re certainly up for it this week!
