very true to the originals, not sure If I'm digging the art style though tbh. Its like theres not enough frames of animation. I get what they're doing but it looks kinda cheap.

Sweet! Been keeping an eye out for games like this to play with my nephew.

Though a quick wiki of the characters, I've only played SOR 1 + 2 and dont remember Blaze being in the first game at all, just Axel and Adam. WTF?! Was there a different version i was playing or was Blaze always a playable character?

The black guy has been cut from the game? This is going to be a SJW wet dream

Also i don't like the art style :(

blaze was always there, Then in 2 they dropped adam for skate, and also introduced max, a wrestler.

I didnt play much of 3 but I think it was the same roster with the addition of some kind of cyborg doctor

Don't know about this one. It's not really streets of rage without Yuzo Koshiro and that 90s detroit house music. There is no mention of Ancient being involved in development and the wailing guitars just aren't streets of rage.

Times have changed, Axel has a beard now :D The art style isn't exactly what I'd have hoped for, but for the love of God....let this be good!

He was only playable in the first game. story for two was rescuing Adam, the skater kid was his brother i think, some relation anyway.

Oh, all the games have become a blur to me. I just remember the big 3, Wrastlin' dude and skater kid, which games they where in, haven't a clue

Sorry. No Koshiro. No dice. He made those games.... literally as he was a coder on them as well!

The man has been putting out incredible music still. Even get his collaborator motohiro kawashima who did some great work on 'oh deer' recently.

Streets of rage was a decent belt scrolling beat me up but the dirty detroit house elevated it to gid like status and gave it a unique atmosphere.

Very similar game coming to (or out in Japan) on the switch....in fact its identical to SoR but different name.

At first I was absolutely buzzing for this - I really "fanboy'd" over that trailer and I have been waiting for some modern incarnation of Streets of Rage to show its face for so long.

... But the smoke has somewhat cleared for me, rather quickly.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still excited to see how this game pans out, but there are a few things I'm worried about:
    • It's looking less likely that Koshiro has went near this installment.
    • Only two characters? I mean, I know it's early days but I really do hope more are announced, should the game be a ways off.
    • I believe it to be a bit of a curse to reincarnate an old franchise with a sequel or remake as it nearly always turns out to be a huge disappointment. Examples would be;
      • Sonic 4
      • Double Dragon 4
      • Bubsy (not that the original ones were that good, but the new one is complete tripe)
      • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5
    • In keeping with the hope that more characters are added, I do hope that, if more are added, they are not hidden behind a paywall -- in fact I hope this game has little to no microtransactions at all. I think we can all agree that would kill its appeal.
Since both developers involved have each made games that are pretty well received, I'm a bit hopeful with this one. But I'll try to take this with a pinch of salt. As I said, it's pretty common for these resurrected franchises to come out and be absolute mince.

Art style does not bother me in the slightest, as long as the game plays well and the controls in general are tight and the music is not some generic royalty-free-sounding garbage. To contradict a point I already made, I can at least accept if Koshiro is not involved in the music, as long as whoever replaces him does a respectable job. Streets of Rage is one of my all time favourite franchises, and to see it get tarnished to fit a modern audience would kill my interest.

Agreed. And since Yuzo is now touring doing remastered versions of the soundtrack live, theres no reason they couldn't use these in the soundtrack.

I am shocked Sega did not make it look like the older streets of rage ?.

Look at Sonic Menia that style worked so well for Sonic old school retro game style with a the old school gameplay with a new twist

Sega aren't involved in this one aside from a partnership deal, and they only published Sonic Mania

The difference between Sonic Mania and SoR4 is that Christian Whitehead was already known for modernising old Sonic games while retaining their aesthetic - his version of Sonic 2 is regarded by some to be the best version of it (don't quote me on that, I just heard comments of that ilk)

If you look at Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, made by the same developer as SoR4, that game has a pretty similar art-style, and is also a remake of Wonder Boy III.

I think the best way to experience any modern incarnation of Streets of Rage while retaining the original artstyle would be to get a hold of Streets of Rage: Remake on PC. Very decent fan-game that was made before Sega shut it down.

Koshiro owns the rights to the music. But it's not like he isn't available. He does freelance work and is doing the Etrian odyssey soundtracks still.

I was sure I played a game on the NES with Blaze as a character, yet my googling returns nothing.
I have it in my head that rollerblades were involved yet all that returns is Rollergames.
Maybe I made it up, yet I wasn't a Sega kid.

Not wild on the art style either but excited about the game.

Hopefully the music is better than the trailer though and more like the original games. The soundtrack in 3 was the business.

Wasn't a fan of 3s soundtrack, I would even go as far as to say it's bad. Had another listen to it there after reading your post and alot of it just sounds like noise.

Whereas with 1 and 2 each track had this groovy jazz type sound along with the great melodies, they are all classics and unforgettable that it makes it hard for me to pick a favourite

Streets of Rage 3's soundtrack is really good, just very experimental and as a result doesn't suit the game as well as the Detroit house music from the first two. It's a really interesting soundtrack by itself and it's creation is really interesting. Strange to think that back in 1994 you had a videogame with such an avant garde soundtrack.

Well I say it's good but that disco area music can go suck all the dick.

"My Little Baby" (the good ending track for SOR1) is still my all time favorite piece of game music. It's incredible to think the Mega Drive could play something that is still stuck in my head 26 years later :)

I think i found maybe my favorite song from the first 2 games. Give this a listen...

Not a fan of the art style, gameplay looks good but it really reminds me of Double Dragon Neon (which was awful). I'll give it a go.

That said, the fan made version SORR (Streets of Rage Remake) that was released for free a few years ago was great fun and I sunk hours into it, a compilation of all levels, characters, enemies and bosses from all 3 games (and branching storylines), it was challenging.

I wasn't initially wild on the art style myself but the design and sound seems great, so it's swayed me. Double Dragon Neon was pretty good but it was visually quite different than this. Game was very well received as well, apart from that infamous IGN review which having read it again just last night, is suspiciously way off base, like something set out to hate it before even playing it. Pretty much every comment on the article is raising questions about the reviewer! Overall though a very decent game.
