Hi all,

List of different measures for drinks in pubs

    I have been trawling the net looking for an official list of the measures of drinks in Pubs. I know spirits are measured at 35ml but what about Cream liquors, port, vermouth wine etc.
    If anyone can direct me to an official source I would appreciate it.

    Why I want to know is we were in a pub the other night and we got 2 different sized measures for martini. One was 35ml and the other was 70ml.

    70ml is the correct measure for any fortified wines and the like (port, sherry, vermouth etc).

    Many, many bar staff haven't a clue, though.

    I can't find anything official on this, though.

    I believe they can have whatever size they want as long as they are clear about it.

    Standard shot is 35.5ml which is a 1/4 gill or 1/16th of a pint

    Some sizes are listed in the law on the price display of 16 drinks.

    (a) draught stout, sold by the pint or 568 millilitres,

    (b) draught ale, sold by the pint or 568 millilitres,

    (i) whiskey, sold by the glass or 35.5 millilitres,

    (j) vodka, sold by the glass or 35.5 millilitres,

    (k) gin, sold by the glass or 35.5 millilitres,

    (l) carbonated beverage, sold in bottles of a capacity of 200 millilitres,

    (m) carbonated beverage having a cola base, sold in bottles of a capacity of 200 millilitres,

    (n) mixer, sold in bottles of a capacity of 113 millilitres,

    (o) water, sold in bottles of a capacity of 250 millilitres,

    (p) wine, sold in bottles of a capacity of 187 millilitres,

    I would expect 71ml became common as they would already have measures for doubles or be able to fit an optic to do 2 singles.

    Baileys is usually 50ml here.

    Thanks a million hopefully should ensure a proper measure next time. When I think of the number of times I was served a half measure of Port or vermouth and paid full price. At least now I can ensure I get what I pay for.
