M50 - Malahide Exit

    Hello,

Next week I will travelling north on the M50 but need to go to Malahide, I've seen the exit on Google Maps but wonder how soon I should get in lane as it's on the right hand side?
My previous forays on the M50 have convinced me that the right lane is for daredevils, land speed record enthusiasts etc, no judgement, I just want to do the right thing is all.

    Peace and love,
    Groovie.

google maps is actually not suggesting the R139 for malahide, it suggests using the M1 and coming off for swords and swinging back over the M1 to malahide.
another option would be to take the M1, come off at junction 4, and swing back south towards swords - but take a left at the third roundabout you hit after exiting and it's a straight run to malahide from there.

whatever route, there's only a few minutes difference time wise.

Thank you for the prompt reply!

I've just been told the meeting is in the Clayton Hotel Dublin Airport. That looks like it's on the R39, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again.

you've little choice so. any alternative to going straight on at the end of the M50 would take you round the world for sport.

Move into the right most lane after the Ballymun exit. There will be signs shortly after this junction telling you to get in lane, but no harm to move any time after Ballymun. The Clayton is really close after this exit, easy peasy.

I have no idea why that junction is signed for Malahide, especialy on the M1S, and not signed for Clarehall or Baldoyle

Slightly off topic, but why was this exit ever allowed from the so called fast lane?
I know it was originally the end of the motorway before the freeflow slip, but it could have looped from the left over the lanes to M1NB.

I've seen it backup half way to Ballymun while the middle lane travels past at near 100kph.

No such thing as a fast lane; for starters - overtaking lane.

There are a few right lane exits on the network; all are from awkward redevelopments of badly designed junctions.

That's why I said 'so called fastlane' but no matter what you call it, the exit is a very poor design.

    Any examples?

M50/M4 is the next worst after the M50/M1 you're on about. M50/N3 has a less critical one. These two are on the N road rather than the M50 mainline

Redesigning any for split left side off-ramps would have been impractical unless you want to knock down a school, hotel or gym. Although the gym went under and was closed for years shortly after the redesign!

As others have said once past ballymun exit make sure you move all the way over to right. This junction is very busy as about 6 lanes so actually it's not too bad speed wise as people are all spilting up to go different ways e.g port tunnel, M1 etc. You need to be all the way over so you don't go off at the wrong exit my mistake.
