Around the world, there are several hotspots for earthquake activity that can at times cause huge damage from the Pacific ring of fire to Iceland. The destructive power of Tsunamis triggered by earthquakes was shown in recent years in Japan (2011) and Indonesia (2004).
Seismic activity can also be a precursor of volcanic events.

Up to a 5.2 magnitude under the seabed just North of Iceland. vedur
At 05:38 UTC this morning an earthquake of magnitude M5.2 occurred 14 km ENE of Grey. It was felt widely in the Northern part of the country. Five more earthquakes with magnitude between 4-4.9 were detected over the past night. The earthquakes originate from the so-called Grey oblique rift zone in the northern Skandadjúp basin within the Tjörnes fracture zone. The earthquakes from this swarm originate at an average of around 10 km depth and the focal mechanism of the largest earthquake indicates normal faulting on a northerly striking fault.
    ...
The closest continuous GPS station located on Grey does not show any visible deformation that might indicate magmatic intrusion. This, together with the depth of the earthquakes, suggests that the current seismic activity is most likely related to tectonic processes at a divergent plate boundary, and not related to the movement or accumulation of magma.
    ...

Comparatively, California has hundreds of recent earthquakes. Such is normal.
    Indeed!

    Some broader earthquake maps:
EMSC Mediterranean map (it also has a world map)

Plate tectonics: Divergent and convergent plate boundaries movement cause for earthquakes and volcanoes.

Papua New Guinea A 6.7 following a 7.5 magnitude Earthquake from the 26th of February.

The vast majority of earthquakes are minor and unnoticed due to scale and depth. It is the "Black Swan" types that are the worry. In the 18th Century Lisbon went from capital of the Portugeuse empire to ruined city due to a combination of quake and Tsunami. Given historical precedents of quakes like the massive New Madrid quake of 1811, which had devastated the mostly unpopulated areas of America then when re-occurs this will effect millions and not the 100s of the 1800s.

    Where was New Madrid?

Injection of fracking wastewater has been associated with earthquakes in Oklahoma and South Dakota.

Does the six weeks later count as an aftershock? Same area, about 30km away.

235 earthquakes in last month CA. That's amazing.

It could be. The 2011 quake that devastated Christchurch, New Zealand is considered by some geologists to have been an aftershock of a strong quake in the area nearly 6 months previously. The quake museum/exhibit in Christchurch is actually very interesting if you ever find yourself there

Scientists complete mission to map fast-moving fault off Alaska (and Canada)
With a slip rate of more than 2 inches per year, this fault may be one of the fastest-moving strike-slip faults in the world. (For comparison, the San Andreas fault in central California slips about an inch to an inch-and-a-half each year.) Movement between the tectonic plates at the fault line has generated six earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater within the last century. One of those earthquakes, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake near Lituya Bay, Alaska, in 1958 triggered a landslide that sent water 1,720 feet up an adjacent mountainside, one of the highest recorded runups of a tsunami — a rapidly rising turbulent surge of water often choked with debris.

7.3 Magnitude off the coast of Venezuela.

Economic geography is even more interesting than physical geography in Venezuela today. Here are two videos, one showing an abundance of merchandise back in 2009 and another much more recent video showing mostly empty shelves.

Seemed to be a lot of shoplifting in 2009.

Mod edit: The situation in Venezuela is dreadful, but not for discussion in this thread.

Pictures on rte.ie from the 6.7 Japanese Earthquake. There are some very striking ones of landslides that were triggered. Sadly it's reported a number of homes were buried in the earthquake's aftermath. Japan has just this week had a Typhoon make landfall causing heavy flooding and wind damage with loss of life. They also had a severe heatwave this Summer.

7.8 South of Fiji, though it's depth was 600+km.

    Hi folks,

Was there any local seismic activity this morning at around 8am? in N Kildare/S Meath? I was in bed and the metal curtain rails and a few other bits in the room rattled/vibrated for about 10-15 seconds.

I would describe it as similar to a train passing by. I lived in the US, my apartment was about 50m away from a slow moving train and a similar level of vibration to that was what i felt this morning. Thing is we live miles away from the nearest busy road/train and are 100m away from the bohereen so truck/train etc are not likely

Hell of a delay on the aftershock :D:D

Probably another logical explanation or some minor local event. Very odd
