How are deGiro for US market trades, does it work well ?
It would appear to be easier to trade locally and move money over and back with deGiro rather than with someone like TDAmeritrade......

    Welcome comments and views

I dont under the 'total difference' field.

It says i am negative by 1k

however I bought shares at 114.2, and they are currently at 116.2.
I purchased about 11k euro worth of them, the fees were just a couple of euro.

5K euro of this is on margin.

Why does this field show a negative? and where is it coming from?

The other field i would like to ask is on the porfolio screen.
In my list of shares (i have 1, visa). It has a result column with negative 500euro in it. Can someone explain this also please?

    Much appreciated gents
    Ray

Ray its probably due to changes in currency. I got some stocks in Dec that are up 2% but my portfolio is only up 0.5% due to EUR getting stronger over USD

Yea look at how much the dollar has lost against the euro in the last 12 months terrible if your investing in the US stock market as you need to gain about 20% to break even.

Degiro is good for not so busy times trading shares (longs) but no so good for day trading busy stocks.

I am in the process of opening an US trading platform and will transfer X amount and keep it in Dollars and work away trading with that for a couple of years for trading US stocks and will convert back to Euro when I feel the exchange rate suits.

surely its an automated process, so dont see why they would be slow.....?

i also have a US account with TD AMeritrade, but getting money over and back is difficult, they charge 2% to convert currency otherwise they send you a US dollar check which takes a few weeks to clear, thats why im thinking of going deGiro.......was with Davy Sleect, but the fees are a killer and the platform is pretty crap

Does anyone reckon there is reason to be concerned about the future of deGiro if this US ETF business isn't ironed out?

Like many, I joined up with deGiro because they don't charge transaction fees on certain US ETFs. Isn't this their USP?

If this drags on and people like me jump ship to a US broker is there a danger that deGiro will lose a substantial amount of business?

I've not looked into it in a while and stand open to correction but I recall reading somewhere that customer accounts on deGiro were only guaranteed to a max of 20k by the Dutch regulator.

I'm not trying to fear-monger or anything like that, I'm a big fan of deGiro, but.... is this something to worry about?

Not sure about the Degiro 20k limit never experienced any problems withdrawing.

I think if you using Degiro to trade us stocks better to convert x amount to dollars and then trade with your converted dollar currency otherwise its confusing to see your progress.

Also as I said previously I was charged big amounts to trade london stocks about €180 per 11k trade to convert to STG and trade so be carefully on londson stocks with Degiro.

If you read my previous thread here you will see some issues I experienced with Degiro but if you only want to trade stocks not day trade i think Degiro would be a good switch I have traded 100s time last year and only seemed to experience issues when trading the smaller stocks that are not on the "Nasdaq - BATS US Realtime". Stocks like Amazon and Microsoft are on the "Nasdaq - BATS US Realtime" therefore you get the realtime quote and can put in realtime stock losses where as stocks on the Nasdaq are 15 minute delayed therefore you cannot correctly put in a stock loss. I also experience other issues when trading these stocks using Degiro. Read my previous post to see the issues I expeienced.

Getting pretty p*ssed off at this stage. I am waiting nearly three weeks for a response to a query I sent to support. Even with the holidays, that is a damn poor response time.

I forgave their shortcomings due to their low cost but it is getting ridiculous now.

Login through their website on your phone instead. It worked fine for me at the time mentioned last night.
It was mentioned in another thread that they have a downtime at that time no?
Also end of the week maintainence and all that.

Their .nl site was also down. They had a technical issue as per their degiroeu twitter account. I normally log on via my phone browser and that also was not working either. On both my phone and tablet.

When it did come back up in the early hours, I wasn't able to place any orders. Will try again later.

After Creating a new account, and transfering funds in. I cannot access any margin/debit money. I have activated my profile as trader. Could someone advise why this might not be available after changing profile? Is there another step to activate it?

Hi guys. Just wondering if someone can help me with something. It seems to be very hit and miss whether stock I am looking at on the ASX are available through Degiro. For example no problem getting hold of TAW but others like Specialist Metals International,SEI not there at all. Does anyone know why?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,019 ✭✭✭ Amber Mealy Illness

Normally you can email degiro and request that your stock is listed. However at the moment you might not get a response from them for weeks. Also stock addition is currently suspended.

It would appear they don't have the resources to respond in a timely manner to the current volume of emails and were/are not adequately prepared for the new mifid legislation (in my opinion).

I did contact them previously to query why they don't have a full list of ASX listed stocks but never got any response.

There is a sponsored thread at the top of the page if you would like to request they add SEI. I would be interested to hear their public response.

I am actively looking for another broker if anyone has recommendations?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,818 ✭✭✭Bateman

I wouldn't hate on any broker too much for failing to be 100% on top of MIFID to be honest, the industry as a whole is going to continue to struggle and it'll run and run...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,019 ✭✭✭ Amber Mealy Illness

There's no hate. This legislation had been years in the making. It absolutely shouldn't impact other day to day operations like responding to emails.

How long is a day order valid for? 24hours? I am placing an order for the ASX and was just wondering if it will still be good once the market opens. Thanks!

The order expires at the end of the current trading day. If you place an order now it'll still be valid when the ASX opens later and be valid until the end of the trading day. I believe the ASX is open from 10am until 4pm Sydney time.

Looking to open a Degiro account does anyone here have any experience withdrawing money from their account?

What were the transaction fees and time etc?

  • Registered Users Posts: 74 ✭✭mansoff

I had no problem withdrawing money and done this quite a bit with large amounts by bank transfers. Probably 3 working days give or take in and out

Market order: will get you the deal done immediately (you may have to suffer a slightly worse price then if you place a limit order)

Limit order: you set a maximum price you are willing to pay. The order won't be filled until another seller drops to that price.

Day order: only lasts for the day - if it doesn't get filled it's cancelled.

    GTC: good til cancelled

Hey guys, how immediate is "immediately" for Market orders? I've had orders in the pending state for hours on both market and limit orders.

Does this mean that no one is selling that particular stock or am i missing something?

    Hi,

How long do funds take to appear on your DeGiro account, if transferred electronically from an Irish Bank account ?

PTSB tell me that funds are in another SEPA bank account next working day and to be fair to them, it's proven through when I have transferred funds to the likes of BNP in France, not to mention peoples accounts with other Irish Banks.

However, I am finding a certain Irish broker is taking 2-3 days to allocate funds, despite even admitting that funds have been received but just not allocated. It's clearly down to poor admin, in the absence of an automated process, so am considering the alternatives.

    Many thanks,

    Thanks,

    G.

I'm with AIB and found my funds transferred into DEGIRO in a day or less, pretty much signed up and had funds same day.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,019 ✭✭✭ Amber Mealy Illness

It generally takes two working days for my SEPA transfers to hit my DeGiro account. One day to transfer to their holding account in Ireland (Danske account?) and then one or more to hit my DeGiro account. I have had funds hit DeGiro and not hit my account for over a week.

They appear to use a holding bank in Ireland and then the funds are transferred to another account in the Netherlands.

DeGiro claim that the delay in hitting my account is due to anti-money laundering procedures. You'd swear I was transferring millions

If I have a Euro account, and I trade on the ASX what currency conversion rate does Degiro use ? is it the EUR/AUD rate from the end of the previous day or is it realtime ? ...do they charge any currency conversion fee/commision ?

I assume the shares are held in my account in Euro ? and converted back again to AUD when I sell ?

That's interesting, as I was told something very similar with regards to why it was taking so long to apply my funds after receipt (from an Irish bank, to an Irish broker).

Given we are existing account holders, they have our ID on file, I'd love to know what exactly they are doing (if anything)?

    Thanks,

    G.
