I didn't know he was in Saving Private Ryan....

    I'll get the clip MsW.

    Just 5 min!

It's gone off youtube. He had 2 lines he said to Tom Hanks on Omaha Beach. About 19 min into the film. You'd know the head on him and a bit of an American accent.

Is he any good at the American accent - I hope he's better than a lot of Americans (apart from Kate Hudson) who make a b***s of the Irish accent! :D

He's ok. There's the noise, screams and terror of war and it's passable! Wayne seems to have been in it too but i can't recall seeing him. Just saw that when i googled.

Did Dan momentarily regain the use of his legs when he lunged in front of Robbie and took a flare for him?

He should have had one of these

Will also be disgusted if they play it as Dan the hero, and I was complimentary of this storyline at first that they weren't making it he said/she said.

MsWestori, great posts but hit the return key every now and then, its very hard to read your posts at times when you don't use paragraphs!

Thanks for reminding me of that; God knows, I remind myself of the same often enough :P xxx

It is something of which I am constantly aware, once I read back my own forum posts, that and my many misspellings.

But as I said to another poster, I type really quickly. When I'm posting to forums such as this, I merely type exactly what I'm thinking, as I'm neither writing a short story nor a novel; I'm simply commenting on a soap, I don't spellcheck or write out drafts as I customarily do when writing a short or serialised story.

Again, I am sorry if you find it difficult to read my post based on this, it is mistake common to many, as are mis-spelling usernames :P:D. xxx :)

    Kind regards;

    MsWesterosi. :P

Just watched it there while ago.

Has it been established whether it's an actual gun or a flare gun?
Although I've fired a good few guns in my time, I'm far from being an expert. I've never seen a pistol with the calibre of a shotgun. In reality, with a bullet that size, the recoil would have knocked Oakley backwards a few feet and there would be a hole the size of a saucer in Dan's back.
If it was a flare gun, it wasn't very bright. And with the petrol vapour, the whole lot of them would have gone up in flames. Which wouldn't be a bad thing, even better if Carol was in there too.

To the best of my knowledge there is a scene in Home Alone when kevin gets a Toy/Water gun and he sprays it black. An 8 year had the sense to do this and Dr Oakley didn't!

When the Guards eventually got into the house not one of the two of them paid any reference to the smell of petrol.

My mother and a good friend of mine are not exactly fond of each other but they have one thing in common. DO NOT ring either of them when FC is on.

Guess who'll be putting his phone on "Hidden" mode around 8.13 and 8.27 tomorrow evening.

I did it to them a few times when the Katie story was peaking last year as well.
I ended up driving for the duration of the show tonight but I'll get them again.

MsW , I'll have to finish the novel I'm reading before I start into yours.
Ah, no bother, sure it'll take me at least a decade to write it, if I'm to completely dissect each and every dropped plot, inane and insane storyline, and many a moment of amnesia by the FC writers, dating right back to when I first started watching it! :D

I was talking about post No.4994:D

You'd wonder is it Maclean Burke or the writers.

I'm really surprised Damo made no effort to try and get Saoirse and take on Oakley

What did Dan think he could do with dead Hannah, when he said he could help her

The attic scene with Oakley, baby born and Miriam was quite good

That was ridiculous. RTE treat the viewing and listening population as if they're idiots. They keep tuning in. Maybe they are.

Your man that plays Oakley is a good actor

Amazing what happens when lads that aren't related to RTE employees are given a chance to get on

He speaks Irish, hopefully he'll get a long term gig on Ros Na Run or something, I mean you can't be hiring someone with decent talent full-time on Fair City if it means you'll have to lay off an RTE lifer like Carol and the likes

Yes, he does! Although he reminds me more of Maleficent more than any male villain.

I think it an absolute disgrace that Wheelie Dan might not make it after getting shot with a Fisher Price, and mallet headed Damo gets to walk out of there shouting and screaming at Caoimhe (Ireland’s greatest ever actor) after getting two wallops of Brick! We’re rooting for you, Wheelie Dan!

I hated the whole siege nonsense.

If they had played their cards right, they'd have realised that they could have done so much more with the character.

Personally, I was hoping that he'd have revenge quietly on Miriam and the group, as he seemed from the beginning, a calculating type - not a deluded maniac.

I hoped the whole group thing had ended differently, with everyone abandoning her, and no one believing in her anymore, due to his machinations and manipulations, and returned to Phoenix Way, where he would inform them, a week or so later that Phoenix Way were shutting up shop due to all the negative publicity and if they wanted a self help group, they'd have to go elsewhere, leaving all of those who were aided by Miriam, and still needing her help, bereft and confused.

Then his character could have been properly developed and we could have had a new permanent, or semi permanent villain, along the lines of other soap bad guys, but that the public, apart from maybe former group members, could be easily fooled with his ''caring doctor routine'', therefore free to cause mayhem elsewhere.

Sadly, they chose that farce, which can only mean the end of the character.

Me too! As it's sending out the wrong message entirely. Namely; that if you die/are seriously injured after trying to play the hero, despite your past crimes, you're instantly forgiven.

I can't help but wonder if a character along the lines of Cathal had, in the past, raped someone would be he treated with such magnaminity were he the one to have taken the shot for Robbie?

Yeah, people would say on FC ''what he did was good'', but that doesn't make him any less a rapist.

So, if everyone is supposed to forgive and praise Wheelie now, would they do the same if it had transpired that he'd abused kids in his youth, instead of a grown woman?

And to see that preview on the Player just sickened me!

They wanted him to avoid prison, get away with a crime, and have everyone liking him again!

Ten Things I Won't Miss About FC's ''Cult'' Storyline.

1: The sight of the of Eoghan's living room; I can't think of the place now without imagining the ''circle of healing'' and toy plastic guns.

2: Emmet with his smarmy smile dressed in his smarmy suit – bring back the mass of cardigans and the gambling addiction – or better still, get rid of the character entirely! :D

3: Pete, Doug and their suspicions.

4: The fact that a self-help group was termed a ''cult'' in the first place.

5: Hannah.... Annoyingly stupid character. One minute she was Team Miriam, then she's Team Oakley – obviously, all those one on one sessions never cured her of her indecisiveness.

6: A benign character such as Miriam being compared to one of the most evil men to have ever lived – she was a victim as much as any of the others; not the perpetrator; she never killed anyone or ordered that anyone be killed; she was completely anti-violence, whereas the real life figure was violence and madness personified.

7: Those bunch of mutes sitting there doing nothing.

8: All the hype in the papers making you believe (but if you watch FC for the craic, you know not to hope for eff all) that the storyline knocks all the other soap storylines into the shade.

9: Oakley's vague motives: First it seemed that he was out for revenge because of the baby, then he infers to Emmet that it's all about the fact that Miriam stole his group, then it's back to the ''you killed our baby'' craic.

10: Dan.... Even if he weren't a rapist, the fact that he has been, quite possibly, one of the most boring as s***e characters of all time..... Remember the Condors basketball team.... all that pointless BS about the gym.... His relationship with Carol and your one, Sally, who couldn't – by the looks of things – bear to be in the same country as him in the end. Good riddance, I say! :D :P

His late father was in Ros na Rún, Fair City and was Fargo in Father Ted amongst other roles. His mother is Geraldine Plunkett our beloved GlenRose... interestingly, she has been on an extended break as her husband (Oakleys dad IRL) died recently..

Ah, yeah; talented actor and great in the Fr. Ted ''Chris the Sheep'' episode, (we have the boxset) R.I.P. And I'm quite fond of Geraline Plunkett too. :)

Despite my jokey reasons (though Dan's likely exit wasn't amongst the aforementioned jokes), I do think that FC has or had, in the past had some talented actors.

It's simply a reason of bad production, writing and direction, as opposed to woeful acting..... Although, there are a few notable exceptions... But, as I said before, I'm not here to bash the actors., their looks, or their body shapes.. :)

Take Denise McCormack, for instance; according to mam she was the worst Farrah ever - I wasn't aware that there were three in all - but her favourite was the first. She said her acting was terrible....

Then I saw Denise in Love/Hate, Red Rock, and, lately, Eastenders, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with her acting talent.

Therefore, it was the FC crew were to blame if people believed her to be a bad ''Farrah Phelan'', not Denise herself.

Take Marcus Lamb; another talented actor, who did have a promising start, until they turned him into this deraged madman, waving about a ''toy gun'' and threatening to burn a house full of people; completely at odds with his calculating, manipulative, menacing and calm performance of his earlier episodes. (Different writers, many different writers, I assume)

Maybe if they had more quality writers and scuttled the dead weight, the soap would be less of laugh and more on a par with it's counterparts across the pond.

Denise McCormack was very much a young actor when she was on FC though. And why are people so bothered about the gun? It's actually plausible, a flare gun would easily do serious damage, they are generally that colour and he explained he got it on his boat. I mean a well to do Doctor is going to find it hard to get a glock or the likes.

It fooked Dan up, alright.......and didn't leave a single stain of blood anywhere. Genius!

Plus it didn't even singe the tosser!

And for such a calm fella, he did go off the deep end fairly fast..... Unbelievable as always; makes about as much sense as the Station siege.

But, God! They sure as hell love their bloody sieges in FC!

I can imagine them sitting around a table together trying to come up with ideas to tie up a plot.

One says: ''We're out of our comfort zone.... Where the hell do we go from here?''

A muttering of nervousness fills the room, until one writer ''the brains'' of the operation, pipes up.

''Sure we can always do the tried and trusted thing; have another siege... Make Oakley a madman, as opposed to that which writer #34 decided, because, lads, that sort of character would be waaaay too much for us to handle; we wouldn't have a clue what to do with him!''

All glare at writer #34, the only REAL brain amongst the lot and he/she shrinks lower into their seat under all the hostile scrutiny.

'Yeah,' says writer#25, 'the Station siege worked well before. This cult thing - that's not really a cult at all, only to some die hard deluded superfans out there, is sure to go down a treat. Let's just have Oakley lose his s**t. stock pile petrol in the attic, pull his flare gun that looks like a toy on everyone and have eejit Emmet do his bidding, until his conscience starts to bite. Then we'll kill Hannah with a small tip to the neck and Dan will get a blast of that flare gun in the chest after miraculously getting to his feet in order to save Robbie - everyone will forget he's a rapist too.....

''Oakley, now a degranged madman - we love our deranged madmen and our sieges in Fair City - will get arrested and Miriam will hand the baby doll back to Caoimhe, to which Damian were start roaring again about wanting to see his daughter!''

    The producer nods slowly.

'Great brainstorming session lads and girls; we'll run with that. The die hard fans are so deluded, they'll love it all, same as they fixate on our other BS storylines, but it'll be a great bit of comedy for everyone else! Storyline sorted!''

I think its one of those new digital flare guns from North Korea. They're nuclear powered. Much safer and less collateral damage.
You can buy them on Wish!
