the RBL apparently went to meet hitler. the red poppy has no place in ireland until it's disassociated with the RBL and conflicts outside WWI and WWII.[/quote]

Ye.... No.... Good attempt at deflection. The Rbl went to Germany in 1935 invited by the German ex German association to visit war grades. The trip was turned into a propaganda coup for the nazis who shot the visit in the light they wanted the world to see it in.

The Ira sinn Fein actively invited and tried to get nazi Germany to take over our island.......... Nice bunch..... And ya get upset over a poppy

So did the SNP but they don't want to talk about that. A lot of people in the 30s had a somewhat admirable respect towards Hitler, look at fleet street. Irish nationalists should be the last people trying to score points of Nazi Germany.

the people in northern ireland are not my long lost brothers.

Mod: Don't turn this into a Troubles thread. I get that it's related but when we're talking casualty numbers it's way off track.

Mod: Nor is it "I can't believe it's not yet another Irish unification thread". Last chance.

All that would be worked out in the review process..

Which (bearing in mind the stupidity of both unionists and republicans up there) would take a generation of 3.

End of the Road you just seem to forget that you have another group of people with another tradition which lives on this Island. To just dismiss that like it is nothing is rather weird. To call the RBL extremists is obvious nonsense and verging bait.

You then just dismiss the millions of Irish people in the South and tell them to just 'suck it up' when many of them will and do have valid concerns and questions on any such event taking place. It's not a question of just saying 'suck it up' when those very same people have a vote on the matter and that is only if the majority in NI vote for it in the first place.

So ultimately I don't see how that is a winning argument for what you want to just tell the same people you need to vote for it to just 'suck it up'. You have plenty of economic and social reasons why a lot of people will not vote for it in the Republic, never mind in Northern Ireland.

To make the claim that HM Government will hand over billions of pounds like that is so naive without any basis whatsoever. It costs over 20 billion a year to run Northern Ireland, the claim was made that HM Government would pay out 10 billion a year in a transition with no word on how the Irish economy would afford it.

What is the evidence that the Irish state could afford over multiple billions to run Northern Ireland without completely crashing the somewhat recovering Irish economy, higher taxes. You would be putting huge economic burdens on the Republic's citizens by telling them to fork out for it. Never mind the social issues that come with it.

A few years ago the support for it from people in the Republic fell rapidly when it includes paying much higher taxes.

You're talking to a poster who once called for the riot squad to attack men/women/children if they dates to block the roads around croke park to stop the Garth Brooks concert so yes EOTR has no compassion/sympathy or empathy for anyone outside his/her little bubble.

My poppy, and many others, will be scrapped on Sunday night.

The trolling, on the other hand, may well rage on until Christmas.

Very true, considering Sean Russell and the Republicans actively invited and tried to get nazi Germany to take over our island. They do not like to be reminded 120,000 decent men from this island, from all backgrounds, fought against the Nazis.

Oh yeah, Ban it, burn it, bury it...

I've asked before if someone had a solution, or a position that would satisfy the critics of the Poppy Appeal - finally someone has suggested banning it, [if I understand the post correctly].
If that happened would people be satisfied? I think not - [there would just be no annual poppy thread].
The poppy debate is simply a device, a useful tool to air issues which some consider need expressing. As the poll demonstrates, others don't agree.
Abandon this thread and other conduits will be found for those wishing to make their points about Britain past and present.
I'd much prefer it if people didn't take such a roundabout route.

I 100% disagree with banning it, what's next if we did. But I strongly disagree with narrow mined, empire saluting halfwits trying to force James McClean to wear one.

I would say you would disagree with anyone in Ireland wearing one. There was someone interviewed on the radio today who wore one in Ireland for a few days and he was attacked many times, heckled, verbally abused, etc

The Swiss too clever to be getting involved in any poppy wearing.

Jaysus that was me...!! I heckled him and abused him, what's the chances of that..?

You don't know me or what I believe about people wearing poppies, you think because I show Republican views here I would ban the poppy or stop people wearing it, No is the answer.

As much as I disagree with what it stands for I still believe in peoples right to wear what they want.

It was quite a good discussion about the poppy until somebody wanted to remind us what we 'owe' Britain for America and Russia beating Germany. :)

The thing about the poppy is that it is all linked. It will always be a controversial symbol here.
Time we developed our own way of remembering.

Civilian deaths are wrong, but more civilians where murdered by Crown forces then Republicans..

The Statistics show that of the over 2000 people killed by Republicans, 723 were civilians. More could be classified as civilians but Republicans targeted politicians, census collectors, army cooks, retired public servants etc as "legitimate targets".

156 civilians were killed by the security forces. So not only should you change the record, you should correct your past statements.

Time we developed our own way of remembering.

Of remembering what? The hundreds of thousands of Irish people who fought in the 2 world wars, for example? Over many decades, none of them has suggested anything other than the Poppy, as far as I know.

You have your Easter Lily to remember Sean Russell and his Republican friends, you have every right to wear that if that is your choice..

Do you think if you just muddy the waters and throw out shi1te you win. My statement was Crown forces (I include Loyalist death squads in that) killed more civilians then The IRA...

I stand to be corrected if you find figures to the contrary.
