Why should they? Mcclean has his beliefs, at least he is honest about his politics. The likes of Evans and McCauley keep it to themselves.

McClean chose not to wear a poppy and was castigated for it. He was questioned by the clearly clueless British press and gave them an answer many Irish people would understand.

I note you have no problem with the Irish FA politicising soccer matches in an already divided society.

You think the anthem should be changed?

Even Scotland and wales don't play god save the queen. How is it reflective of the reality of Northern Ireland society? I was also referring to the poppy wearing requested by the Irish FA. You have to wonder what planet these blazers live in.

McClean is well respected by his teammates who play for the North. Unlike some posters on here they do not prejudge him or presume him to be a "scumbag" because of his beliefs.

I was enjoying reading the debate here from both sides where some interesting and reasonable arguments were put forward.

However, A Little Pony, your attack on McClean reads like a bigoted rant and does your argument no favours whatsoever.

Those pictures are of McClean with NI players Chris Brunt and Gareth MacAuley

Seems to be a perfectly decent fella.

Wonder what would happen if all the Irish players in England decided to wear an Easter Lily..

    :D

Mcclean is a scumbag with a deep bitter hatred, it leaks out of his every pore.

Or in other words: 'McLean is an uppity Fenian who doesn't know his fucking place'.

He is a great lad according to anyone who actually knows him. But that doesn't fit some people's narrative who want to put McClean down as a bitter(very important word) British hating blood thirsty republican backed up by his aggressive tackling and failure to wear a poppy and of course where he came from. Disgusting is the only word.

12 appearances and 6 yellows......but even allowing for the tackle on Ince I wouldn't describing him as a 'dirty' player, but he is combative and physical

One way of saying it. I also think that McClean earns his living in Britain, plays for a British team in front of British fans, and should consequently respect British traditions. But for those who stood up to Germany in 2 world wars, McLean would not be able to go to Britain and earn big money there.

I wear a poppy myself but nobody should be obliged to wear one. That goes against the whole "fighting for freedom" thing.

He plays a sport, a worldwide sport. Most premiership money comes from outside of Britain with West Brom actually owned by the Chinese. McClean might say he is lucky his ancestors survived in Derry given the carry on of the British Military.

There were no Germans in Derry on 30th January 1972.

Mother of suffering jaysus are you for real..

Is this the same country that raped and pillaged dozens of countries including mine over the past 200 years. The same fans that readily sing racist songs week in week out, the same fans that sing about the famine (Rangers)..

McClean will never wear a poppy that is stained in the blood of innocent people in his home town.

West Bromwich Albion midfielder James McClean has said he will not wear a poppy against Manchester United at Old Trafford this weekend. He also refused to wear the symbol while at his former clubs Wigan and Sunderland.
In West Brom's matchday programme, McClean said he would "wear it every day of the year" if it only represented those who died in WW1 and WW2.

    So, let me process this...

You think that because James McClean earns a wage in England, he should have to wear a poppy even though he doesn't want to?

    Do you actually mean that?

Maybe scumbag is a bit harsh but I wish the whole Poppy fiasco would die out with Mcclean and he can focus on his football and not give the media the clickbait they need.

The majority of those who respect the poppy are remembering those who died and made sacrifices during WW1 and WW2, so the likes of McLean could live in peace and relative prosperity. WW1 and WW2 were by far the biggest conflicts.

120,000 Irishmen volunteered to fight Hitler in WW2 alone. Many more served in other areas eg merchant navy. If nobody stood up against Hitler, McLean may not have a choice to wear a poppy or not. Look at how those from even neutral countries invaded by Hitler were treated.

The poppy will be compulsory after they 'get control back'.

You heard it here first. :D

Nitpicking about other things is like refusing to wear a seat belt because in 0.01 % of accidents seat belts cost lives because people cannot escape from the car if it goes up in fire.

And what is your opioin of the perfectly reasonable reason McClean cited for his refusal to wear one??

so everyone who works in england should be forced to wear one??

Should everyone coming into ireland and working here be forced to wear the lily??...it's an irrational position you hold

He dos not just earn a wage: he earns a lot of money. 21 out of the 22 players on the pitch show respect to the fallen, those who made sacrifices. Those who gave their tomorrows so others could have their todays.

    🍀 Bloody Sunday 🍀
A reminder why many don't wear a Poppy, where the British Army shot 26 unarmed civilians killing 14 in the Bogside area of Derry, as they protested against internment and for civil rights.
