Yeah and some lads will pay that for a week old AA calf

Have paid 350 for calves and they were the most profitable calves weve ever had

Would they be exceptional quality calves?.....haven’t stood in a Mart yet this backend but heard that Char,Lim,B.B. weanlings etc are back €100 on this time last year...wouldn’t seem so looking at those prices.

Ah the top prices would be alright, but most would be 'good' quality. There's a cerain area in clare bordering the burren where the land is very dry and can carry heavy cows no problem. Quality always good from these areas like Corofin, Kilnaboy, Ennis etc. No dairy influence at all. Limestone land as it's known in these areas.

This year was the last of us doing that. Does he do many cows like this. Ours had her own calf and 4 aa sucks, 2 would go in with her own calf in the morning and the other 2 with her own calf in the evening.pure hardship and would get messy if you had a difficult cow and a few of them . money maker no doubt

He's in his 80's and still going strong. Would have maybe 4 cows like this. Has a guy delivering the calves to him. Dead quite cattle too.

I'd finish those bullocks if I was you. You will get screwed in the Mart by some canny dealer. I'd put them on a good ration diet.

I am killing Fr bullocks atm and they are weighing 300kgs DW averging bout 1000e.

That zll AA bull I had in the photo thread. 225kg made €350 -awful disappointed
Two red zll Aa bulls- 192kg- 470€

Sorry to hear KK. They are the exact type of cattle i buy. But you were robbed tbh. I bought 10 of those sort for 480 last nov. They will hang for 1500 next July. Not being spoilt just lashings of the best grass i can possibly grow.

Well I don't think so...bought them for 700e in April and they are coming 2 years old now. Every man is different!...no wintering..no expensive bales...not a bad turn I think?

    Definitely split.

Runner ring for him & let her dry off.
She's along time to go, which wouldn't be good

That's where we sell them. There usually 20kgs heavier. Cattle must be well back. Won't be going for a few weeks. Meant to be big entries at minute due to weather

It is nearly too late to finish without silage and housing. They will need to put on 70ish kgs Even at a kg/day weight gain that is 70 days.

If you get 950 for them I would not finish them unless I was taking them back to grass next spring.

Kilmallock is usually as good as it gets for store cattle

A lad finish them bullocks would want to be buying them at that or even cheaper to make a margin on winter finishing. Even a lad carrying them to grass to kill next year would want to buy them again at 850 or less to have a margin. 1300 is a super price for any finished Friesian bullock. To come into slightly over 1300 euro a Friesian bullock would want to weight 370kgs DW at present or about 730-750LW.

There would surely be a bit of a twist in them if bought now at 850, winter them and finish this time next year,

Not much Bass is right...to wintering them you wouldn't have much change out of 250e. Too many lads don't count the cost of fuel..sheds..bales etc. The cost of a bale of silage is 25e plus. They won't factor in labour not to mention hardship.

I get the hardship thrown in for free and If i'm running short I'm good at making it as well.

    It all helps.

On a serious note, there were cattle in the mart today, lovely FR bullocks, 551kg and ended up at 805. I stopped at 8, what a mistake, they were cracking animals.

Marts are packed sideways at the moment with cattle and good weight on a lot of them.

The heavier fleshed friesian stores are holding their own here. But the lighter plainer lads are a hard sell. Seen a canny buyer assemble a bunch of 20+ averaging 400kg at tad under €500. All Holstein but a couple of goodish type in it.

Was thinking of letting her go and keeping him on for another couple of months with the rest, normally have a guy buy her calves private- he's bought the last three anyway!

The big issue with DD is cattle can be from 20-80kgs lighter than advertized. Most of the time they are 30-40 lighter. The next thing is though advertized as BF they are not. But having said that they look fairly square but mind you they may well be a narrow one or two in the bunch.

The other big issue is that from now to housing you will only put on 20ish kg on cattle. I bought store in early August and they have 40+kg put on. Another 20+ before housing is that a stores bought in the 350-400kg bracket will hit housing 420-470kgs. The lad that owned them would have been better off selling in early August you have a great chance to have a decent store at housing. He more than likly only maintained them.

So what are they worth we give that they are 400kgs.I expect to buy them delivered into my yard at 600-620 euro. If they looked a bit better than the photo's I go another 20 but if they were 370kgs and 3-4 narrow one's I be lookin at 550 euro delivered.

They be a better twist than the 530kgs bullocks at that

Tyhat is the advantage of beiong in the mart a few days a week. Were you the canny buyer Will. If he gets them moving and can kill before late Augus he have a good twist.

Anyone seen any big weanlings sales yet?....what is general run of nice goldie Charolais calves bulls and heifers from 300 kg heifer calves and 350 to 380 kg bull calves?

Is it lighter weanlings or heavier ones that are better trade?

Nice Golden Charolais bulls 300-350 are making up to 1150 back to 900. Saw a few very average lads @300kg make €750. All depends on quality.

I like them like my woman bass. A bit better looking and a bit more size in them! They were bought for an farmer with a limited budget but a bit of descant silage a shed and fairly good run for them next year. They'll be back in the mart next July.
