Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Advice on Sports betting

    Hi,

    I regularly bet on different sports events and games hurling, football etc

    I try read up on the stats of both teams incl form , past head to head, players injured etc

    Dont do accums and never back over a treble.

    The problem is I can never seem to get a good winning streak going at all. I checked my account deposit/ withdrawal history /lately and i am only a few quid in profit over 6 months.

    is there something im missing or a technique i should try introduce?
    How do you guys pick them?

    If you can make any kind of profit by gambling, you're doing alright! Especially if you're betting on various different sports rather than specialising in 1 or 2.

    For me the 3 most important factors in winning gambling are:

    1) Patience. Don't be putting on lots of bets that you "half-fancy", wait for opportunities that jump out at you and make a compelling argument for a bet.

    2) Bet in singles only. If you are betting in multiples, factor 3 below will not be accessible to you.

    3) You MUST get the best price. This is what will generally make the difference between a winning or losing week/month/year. If you can get on with the only bookie offering 11/8 on a 5/4 shot, you have a great chance of being profitable in the long run.

    My only other advice would be with regard to cashing-out. It infuriates me to hear people saying "I cashed-out for double my bet when United went a goal up". So, your bet was going the way you expected but you limited your winnings by cashing-out?? I NEVER cash-out a winning position (obviously, it has cost me badly a few times) but am not averse to cashing-out for a loss when my bet goes wrong and I no longer believe it will win.

    Check oddschecker best prices. And remember smaller tournaments in sports . Including football teams are well known to rig games. To much money to be made

    Hi,

    You should track every bet, not just deposit/withdrawls.

    You say you bet on multiple sporting events. Find out which ones you're losing money on.

    For example: Football,Tennis,Rugby,Basketball etc.

    Have seperate spreadsheets of each bets and see returns, you could find that your football bets are negative returns, but your Basketball ones are really good returns.

    If you don't have some way to put your opinion into a percentage chance of winning then you're just guessing wildly and will probably lose.

    If you're betting too high a percentage of your bankroll on a bet you will definitely lose even if you are picking good bets.

    Someone that has developed their own method for pricing up games and has success with it will never share it with anyone as it takes a huge amount of work and trial and error and a reasonable level of maths knowledge to try to do it properly.

    Focus on trying to come up with something like that instead of spending your time basically betting blindly.

    Start asking yourself when you are reading the stats you mentioned in your opening post what it means, how you can interpret it and what it means in the context of this game.

    Give me an idea what you are doing with your research for the Chelsea v Arsenal game;

    They have both played Leicester this season, what can you take from those two games to try to form an opinion on this upcoming game?

    What impact do you think home and away will have on this game?

    What trends have you identified in each teams seasons to date?

    What else do you feel is an important factor in deciding on a bet for this game?

    West Brom v West Ham

    Over 2.5 Goals @ 2.25
    Under 2.5 Goals @ 1.7

    Which do you think is the better bet and why?

    Give me 3 reasons you bet on sports in order of importance to you.

    Chelsea playing at home ,being current champions and on a good run while Arsenal got whipped by Liverpool but bounced back against Bournemouth and Koln scoring 6 between the two games. Both of these victories were at home though and Chelsea are obviously a better team.

    Chelsea beat Leicester away while Arsenal again won at home. Their away form isn't good so far this season. Chelsea were also without Hazard for that game

    This is also a derby game which normally adds to the tempo. Chelsea have already beaten a good Spurs side this season away from home.

    Both sides played midweek too but Chelsea's game was easier and they have had 2 more days recovery.

    If I was to bet I would go with a Chelsea win and over 2.5 goals

    That's a good start to get a quick feel for the game but it's nothing more than a very quick glance at the recent fixtures without understanding the results.

    Take it a step further.

    Pick any game from the next round of premier league and try to predict the starting XI for both teams.

    When you have this become the manager for both teams and describe what tactics you think each team will employ to maximise their chances of winning.

    Some teams will be happy to sit deep and counter. Other teams will press high up the pitch. Does the first team have enough pacey wingers to break at speed to force the other team to sit a bit deeper? Will the striker try to hold the ball up or will he play on the defenders shoulder and try to get in behind? Will one team play a 4-5-1 and pack the midfield or go with the new sexy 3-2-4-1? Playing with one striker or two? Is one team exceptionally good at converting set pieces? Ect.

    Thanks for the advice. Iv re thought my betting tactics using a combination of the advice given.

    Much more ore research, picking home teams in great form at lower than evens odds. Also mostly doubles with a max treble.

    Since Saturday iv done 4 bets with 3 of them coming in. Leaving me a profit of 335 for the week!

    Very happy.

    Im also logging my bet results and keeping an eye on how other teams are performing with a view to possibly backing them down the line
