Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Brother and his GF are in Iceland at the moment. The were praying for Aurora while they were there. Looks like they might have hit the jackpot. Anyone know if Iceland has clear skies at the moment?

    {Edit} Doesn't look like it unless they are in the north of the Island.

    A strong G3 magnetic storm is forecast for tonight with a kp index of 7!.
    Strong G3 Storm Watch
    Possibly a treat in the works for aurora sky watchers. A Strong (G3) geomagnetic storm watch will be in effect beginning Wednesday (September 6) when the coronal mass ejection (CME) observed Monday is expected to sweep past Earth. Sky watchers across middle to high latitudes should be alert during the next 48 hours. More updates regarding this to follow.

    Mainly due to a mostly earth facing cme from an m class 5.5 flare.
    The flare was associated with a Type II radio emission with an estimated velocity of 1472 km/s, along with a 10cm radio burst (TenFlare) lasting 52 minutes and measuring 1600 solar flux units (SFU). Low energy proton levels as measured by the GOES-13 spacecraft are currently on the rise.

    Just checking updates there, and there was 2 xflare events today and was in a good earth facing position when it occurred :D.
    Region 2673 just produced a nice X2.2 solar flare at approximately 09:10 UTC (Sept 6). This is the first X-Class event to be detected since May 2015. The active region is still in a decent position for Earth directed eruptions. More updates will be provided should a coronal mass ejection (CME) be associated. More to follow.     update:
    The largest solar flare of the current solar flare was just observed around region 2673. A massive X9.3 event was detected at 12:02 UTC Wednesday. A bright coronal mass ejection is now visible and will likely be directed our way. More to follow today.

    Last night's cme was fairly weak so we probably would have seen any aurora even with clear skies.
    It looks like with cme from the X9 has hit earth, better chance of seeing something with this one if only we had clear skies tonight:(

    KP is 8.33 in the next hour... I've never seen it that high when the skies are somewhat clear.

    Pity it's still light outside, but def worth a look when it gets dark if it is still at that strength

    Hopefully some people got to see it. I went for a look but it was too cloudy here in Clare. I'm off to Abisko and the Lofoten Islands at the end of Feb, so will have to cross my fingers for then.

    Kp of 6/7 outside now and magnetic field slightly South. Plenty of reports of Aurora up north.
    Nothing down this far though yet, big bright moon not helping.

    I picked it up in the lens almost by chance at 18.30. Living in Achill with a Northerly view i often throw the camera out for a look. By ten the arc was visible to the naked eye. I was driving by then and the fecking moon was up. Sure you'd never imagine a perfectly visible arc to the naked eye with a big bright moon. Incredible, just managed a shot when i got home.
    On mobile, will attempt to attach pics tomorrow.
