sold a few Aug 16 born bulls last week all LM it was quiet at the mart but needed to move them on

    374kgs - 900
    346kgs - 840
    424kgs - 880 plain black calf

    oct 16 born
    360kgs - 760 plain black calf

Sent a few heifers for export too, 2.80 a kg for 2 muscly ones and 2.65 a kg for a lighter one

How do you find the August calving ?
Did you feed the bulls at all and if not would it pay better to give them a few nuts say 6 weeks before sale ?

I have a ch cow I want to get red of, she is 1100 kgs what would she be worth in mart at moment?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,339 ✭✭✭Dozer1

August calving is fine, they calve in the field next to the house so handy out.

they got a bit of creep during the winter to keep them quiet and nuts then for the last 3 weeks, not enough but cutting my cloth to measure.
there was only 1 of the 4 that was a shapely calf the rest were good honest ones but nothing fancy so I don't see the point of pushing them.

Did anyone here sell spring 2016 friesian bullocks lately?

From what I hear it depends on weights. Good friesian with good weight on them heading for 500kgsor better than it are selling for 1.7-1.8/kg. Lighter Friesians below 400kgs are struggling to make 1.6/kg with plainer ones less than that.

Thanks Bass. Seems to be the go of them according to the papers too. Heard good 500kg lads were touching 2/kg in Killmallock last Monday week.

An Aberdeen Angus weanling at 350kilos would make between €700-€800.

Lads locked up at the min but if I go clear in Dec hopefully I'll have a share of aa and blue late spring calves to sell. Would there be much of a hit taken if I did sell them in Dec/ Jan as opposed to holding till march? May well have to line things up in to hold them till march anyway in case I don't go clear. Just looking to see the options for the winter

Pre Christmas can be a good time to sell, January is often a dead month. cattle can sell very well from early/mid February for last few years.

Start of February always goes well for fancy stock, hold till march if they are plain.

She would have had 7 calves by that time if she calved at two years old. And if she didn't she's probably not going back in calf quick enough and/or is mud fat. That and incalf to euro and only 4/6 weeks away would you chance her at any more? Can buy nice first calving springers for €1700/€1900.

I'd calve her your self unless you think she'll be a problem and sell separate after or around 2k for the outfit if it's good.

Would AA heifers, off dairy cows make more if they were put in calf? They'll be approx 19 months when can be sold or would I just be narrowing the potential buying pool too much? If I was to serve them when would they want to be served for beef Autumn calving?

Sell them as they are, otherwise you'll need to carry them through to near springing and they would be near finished then anyways.
